Premier on Kits base: Fight not over

Premier Christy Clark says the fight to save the now-closed Kitsilano Coast Guard base isn't over.

Clark says her government had no advance notice of yesterday's shutdown, adding basic respect between governments would suggest the Feds should have given her a head's up.

"And look, I get how hard it is to balance a budget, I know that they're trying to balance their budget too, but there are some things you can't stop doing. and this is one of them."

Clark promises she's not going to let this issue go. She says Justice Minister Shirley Bond has written a strongly worded letter to Ottawa, and Clark herself plans to make a phone call.

Bond, in fact, is demanding a meeting in person with the federal fisheries minister.

She says she’s faxed a letter to Keith Ashfield expressing deep concern with the closure, especially how it was done.

Bond was asked why write another letter, when previous ones have obviously gone nowhere.

"I have had personal conversation with minister Ashfield before and I would like to have done that today and he was unavailable for that call. And you know, the interesting part of this is it crosses party lines, it’s the mayor of Vancouver, it’s British Columbians, saying we want to see this decision reconsidered."

The federal government maintains closing the base will have no impact on people's safety.

Earlier, Clark was promoting her new budget and unveiling details of a new child care strategy.

She chose the Dorothy Lam Children's Centre in Yaletown to announce details of the Early Years Strategy, which promises 2,000 new childcare spaces over three years at a cost of $76-million.

"In addition to that, effective April 1, 2015, a new B.C. early childhood tax benefit will provide $146 million to approximately 180,000 families with children under the age of six."

Clark says Quebec’s $10-a-day childcare is a non-starter in B.C.: "It’s proven unaffordable – even for Quebec."

Do you not think this is a little late for her to start acting tough against Harpo. He does not listen to anone let alone someone that will not win the next election?unless he comes to the aid of the Liberals/Cons of the coalition and rescind the order! Go NDP Go

      What's next? Wedgies or noogies?

@Ken280 The BC Libs have been addressing this issue since it was first announced last year!

Haha, she's talking tough now that it's closed...too bad she didn't actually do something about it before. Too late now, the feds aren't going to reopen something they've closed.

It's really too bad the locally elected Cons didn't do the right thing, listen to their constituents and tell Harper he was wrong on this one instead of towing the party line. Awesome representation there.

Voters, please remember that in the next election.

Ken280: Ken, please tell the readers why Adrian Dix was absent in the legislature yesterday for QUESTION PERIOD and the reading of the BUDGET.

Secondly, the NDP need 49% plus of the majority vote before ever forming government.

As Adrian Dix had dinner with both NDP Premier Greg Selinger of Manitoba and NDP Premier Darrell Dexter of Nova Scotia, he has a lot of explaining to do to the B.C. taxpayers during the election campaign of how he can avoid doing major blunders like they have done destroying two Canadian provinces.

@joes_2868 So true; perhaps Dixie Cup was trying to find his platform and budget lost somewhere in the BC Federation of Labour.

It is very disappointing that the Premier of British Columbia apparently does not command enough respect to warrant some kind of advance notice of the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.

Without more information, it is difficult to ascertain where the problem lies.

Premier Clark was front and center taking credit for the shipbuilding program which was a Federal decision.

@insite In order to command respect a person must first earn/gain that respect. Not never ,no way is it going to happen for camera clark as to many people can read and most of her lies are public knowledge.

Perhaps she will trade the pipeline for the reopening of the coast guard base and claim it was done to help the people.

We are going to have mega oil tankers without any coast guard to check them over for basic safety compliance.

Sounds kind of like snookums and harpo the clown got together. And harpo the clown said to snookums. He said snookums. I will shut the coast guard down. You send me a letter and I will take a few weeks and then re-open it. And then, you snookums, will look like a hero and the silly sheeple will vote for your merry band of theives and and scum bag liberals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@BY_7463 Sorry for my first post. That's worse if Mr. Harper in fact got together with her.

I would add that they both believed the simultaneous events (the questionable budget and the unpopular Kits closure) would temper the backlash against them.

      @BY_7463 Snookums? Harpo?? scum bag???

It is hard to take your comments even remotely seriously when you can't get past the school yard language.

Wow , maybe we do need to put more money into education.

I am curious to know if the Provincial Gov. can take over the running of the Coast Gaurd station?

Can they lease the building from the Feds and move toward funding it?
    1. insite posted on 02/20/2013 03:49 PM
@TeriR Hope this is not a duplicate. Last one disappeared.

My question: what asset would you suggest the provincial government sell in order to fund it?

After all, we don't have much cushion n our small surplus budget.
    2. DougF_4971 posted on 02/20/2013 05:35 PM
@TeriR Short answer is no. The Canadian Coast Guard is just that...a federal responsibility.

Even if there were no jurisdictional issue, the provincial government has no funding to run the station. Heck...BC can't (or won't) even afford to adequately fund the 90 volunteer search and rescue teams in the province.
