Crown Corporation tries to prevent journalist from filing Freedom of Information requests

The BC Pavillion Corporation is trying to block Freedom of Information requests from an investigative reporter.

CKNW Contributor Bob Mackin says PAVCO has told him they have asked BC’s Privacy Commissioner for  permission to disregard his FOI requests.

Mackin says he has filed tons of freedom of information requests and has never heard of this ever happening.

"Two people can solve this Peter Fassbender and the PAVCO board can rescind this, this is outrageous it should not be allowed here in British Columbia especially under a Premier who supposedly in July 2011 sent a directive out through the entire government to be open with information, open with data, because she says it is taxpayers information so it belongs to the taxpayers."

PAVCO runs both BC Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Both have been the subject of several Bob Mackin investigations.

Typical, trying to hide information again. I have a feeling that the cost to taxpayers is exponentially higher that what has been reported.
Nice to know that families are getting screwed but we have a damn renovated old stadium that leaks for half a billion or more (most likely)

What a disgrace. Freedom of Information is a right in our society. Just because they don't like the questions this guy is asking does not place them above the rest of us. CEO should be replaced for even asking for this. There was never a proper recruitment and hiring process for that position in the first place, it's always seemed pretty shady to me.

@Cin_3294 Yes it is a right in name only - We lost our freedoms many years ago

Pavco reminds me of a cat, furiously digging to cover up the poop in a litter box. No matter how hard they move the paws, the doodoo is still there.

We shouldn't have to FILE an FOI request, this information should just be published quarterly. Anything that comes out of the taxpayer's pocket should be posted on a website every 3 months. ALL information.

Perhaps when we have our election things will change for the better. There needs to be at least a look at the BC Rail Scandal and this as well. What is it exactly that is hidden, something smells here very badly.

Premier Clark told us that her government would be open and transparent. What a crock. I've never seen so many inept, incompetent usless politicians including the top airhead dog in my life. Why don't you loosers just get lost or do something like get a real job or something.

@BillF_8 Yes the BC lie BERALS have built their reputation on LIES.

@BillF_8 Open and transparent government is the new reference to
backroom wheeling and dealing and strategizing on how
      to mainpulate the taxpayer.

bctaxpayer: We are all wondering why former NDP finance minister Dave Stupich was given 18 momths house arrest, did not have to pay back the missing 1 million plus and had all of his legal bills paid for by the taxpapyer.
    TYPICAL NDP CORRUPTION!

@joes_2868 This is about present day not more than a decade ago. This is about the direction the government is supposed to be taking under the direction of our premier---empty words and promises, fantasies and a wish list of where the LNG just may take the province in a decades time.

All governments are imperfect as we have seen. Surprisingly no one seems to take notice of Adrian Dix and his statements about learning form the past mistakes of governments regardless of political stripe. Even though you may not agree with I give him credit for taking responsibilities for his actions and apologizing for them.

This current crop of government MLAs and such do no such thing. It is always the other guys fault or our misunderstanding of things. Their balanced budget legislation means squat as all of their budgets that have been balanced have only been accomplished by juggling the books and accounts. Such as getting BC Hydro to defer debt repayment to decades down the road.

This government has not managed the economy any better than or any different than any other government before them. They lucked out with high commodity prices that gave them hefty royalties from the natural resource sector that offset the income tax cut they gave us back in their first term. But as you can see as the commodity prices and royalties are falling the provincial budget is going in the red. But wait they are now going the way of selling of every asset they can think of to balance the books. And BC Hydro can pay double the price for power from the private producers because the price just might go up in a decade or two and they just might make that money back.

All governments should be asked to sign a contract with the public to disclose the books to us the taxpayer. We deserve to see how much money is collected and how it is spent. PERIOD!

This is one of the biggest loopholes in the BC Community
Charter...third patry protection.....a perfect opportunity for
those, who are ess than forthright with the taxpayers being
able to hide behind this disquise of "freedom of information"
    protection.

    It is absolute nonsense.

Abbotsford has done the same thing with the Abbotsford Heat/
    Global Spectrum contract.

Any government officials/Dept., first, step is to hide behind the
    "third party confidentiality" guideline.

Anyone involved as a third party, when involved with government
should be required to waive ability to withhold information from
    the taxpayer.

    Good on you, Bob Mackin!

My theory is that Peter Fassbender and/or Pavco has been invited through back door channels to make this request to avoid disclosure of information prior to the election. Ultimately, after the election it will be disclosed, but too late to affect the election.

Totally consistent with all efforts of this government to avoid disclosure.
