BC's Justice Minister hasn't considered financial impact of tougher restrictions on those not criminally responsible

BC’s Justice Minister says she's already working with the Federal Government to ensure tougher restrictions involving people found not responsible for serious crimes are approved quickly.

"We've been very aggressive about this agenda. Generally, I'm very pleased,” says Shirley bond.

Bond says --at this point-- there have been no discussions about funding the legislative changes.  She admits some costs may be attached, but says now's not the time to figure out how much everything will cost.

"Well, certainly, we've had no discussions about the cost or the implementation of the policy and the legislative change and there's a lot of work to be done and it is likely that as we look at hearings, in fact, where we'll also require a psychiatrist, it looks like to give an opinion on risks, and for a judge to make that finding, may well be some changes that we need to discuss.'

She says the most important thing to acknowledge is the need for constructive change and she's looking forward to working with the federal government to ensure the current system improves.

    What does this mean? Does it mean to be charged with a crime and then be found later innocent of it or does it mean to commit a crime and then be found not responsible because of something like mental illness?

      @PaulJ_angryman The latter...

    Does this mean that if you are found not guilty by a Judge in Court that the government will have some sort of legislation to deem you otherwise immediately there after?

    The door will close fast and hit the last Liberal in the butt as they are driven from office after the next election.

      @RonE_1902 No. It means either the person was insane, or is unable to understand what their actions were. They are usually have some mental illness, or could be under heavy drugs/alcohol at the time of offense.

      Incidentally this has nothing to do with the Liberals as the Legislation is a Federal one.

    Because if she did it would have to go into the budget. But don't worry BC we will get the Feds to pay and then you can congratulate us. NOT.

      @WayneM_2492 That Ms. Bond has not figured out the financial impact means that she is not a an accountant in addition to not being a lawyer.

      But, her remarks only underscore the point that every program that benefits BC citizens will not necessarily proceed because of fiscal restraint-except for the partisan and negative advertising currently playing in the media.

    Shirley Shirley Shirley aren't you making a mountain out of a mole hill. We are not talking about 100's of these kinds of cases. We are talking a few once in a while it is not like every major crime or killer fits this category. How many have we had in BC in the last few years maybe 6 or less?

      @JimP_5079 Damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.
