Pat Bell on HD Mining now versus then

While Jobs Minister Pat Bell says his comments last night about the HD Mining controversy are not a dramatic turn around, an interview a few months ago seems to show otherwise.

This is Jobs Minister Pat Bell just last night.

"The public needs to have confidence that any jobs that are allowed to be taken by, particularily temporary workers I think there is a difference between that and immigrants, need to truly be unfillable by British Columbians and by Canadians and that has clearly not been the case here and we have all learned that."

But Bell sounded a different tune in an interview on the Bill Good show back in November.

"The company's obligation based on the federal government temporary foreign worker program is to go out and advertise across Canada to try and find workers who are capable of doing this, they did that, they placed ads in virtually every major paper, all the internet based services, the mining association website, literally every place that a miner would look for work and had no uptake on it at all."

Trades unions say a court ordered review of hundreds of resumes proves the company overlooked Canadian miners.

Mr. Bell why did your government defend this action and try to spin this into a case that the company did everything it could to find workers when that is not correct. I have such distrust of your government and politicians in general because they simply lack the self confidence to tell the truth and admit they made a mistake. I understand why it is done and the public deserves some of the blame as well. I remember when Joe Clark told the truth about raising the gas tax and Trudeau ran with that won the election on lies and then did what Joe was going to do anyways. I personally believe we need more independents elected. I feel they represent their constituents better by supporting the things that are wanted and oppose those things that are not good for their riding. I know the next government if it happens to be the NDP will head down the same road and it will be just a matter of time before they step in the DO DO as well. But for now Mr. Bell your party really dropped the ball on this and failed all British Columbians by not looking closer at this instead of standing by H D Mining.

I too, would like to see more independents. But we will have to pay our MP's and MLA's more money if we want them to represent us. The party system is very powerful in this country. With all the dumbed down left and right rhetoric. It would be really nice if more folks would educate them selves and vote. Anyone want to guess how many voters will show up in may to vote. My bet is under 60%.

@MichaelD_10 As you, say!( With all the dumbed down left and right rhetoric) and I suppose your great BCPC has all the answers and are immune to any rhetoric? We have to pay MP's and MLA more money? What have they done for you lately that you are asking for a pay raise for them? I guess it will be ok if it is a liberal bill or BCPC but ifit came from the NDP, Wow! the sky would be falling. It is time we put Government emphasis for the people and not run it like a corporate business with business leader in charge and controlling the outcome of every proposal. Governement is the people, not corporations. End corporate and union, Non-residents donations! Go NDP Go

Another HUGE lie from the Liberals!
There were many qualified CANADIANS who sent in resumes.

    Is it May yet?

When cornered by the facts and a light shone on it, only then can they do the right thing. Economic treason isn't a matter of left and right, it's a matter of respect for Canadian citizens.
Now lets find out which politicians were bought by the Chinese.

@SlimP_9860 Exactly - this didn't happen without government support - and likely someone paved the way while getting their pockets lined

It is interesting to note that one of the cornerstones of the government's Jobs Plan has crumbled into coal dust. The other cornstone (shipbuilding) which was not of her making but she takes credit for it until it, too, could hit a reef. We do not know if the shipbuilding program will succeed. The results are too far in the future to assess today. Who knows? It might be like the F-35 project.

Mr. Bell told Bill Good that HD Mining did not mislead the BC government with its foreign worker plan. Many would agree with that statement because the provincial goverment and HD Mining were joined at the hip. And, the BC government was looking the other way so that it could claim that the Jobs Plan was working. But, no one was looking out for Canadian workers and immigrants.

Going forward, when our resources are being extracted, the companies should be required to assume more of the responsibility for training workers for their specific resource project. The companies should know and, in fact do and know what skills are required to extract oil, gas, minerals, coal or wood.

In fact, they know what skills are required even before they put a drill or shovel into the ground.

BC is having a hard enough time to train enough skilled workers to replace those workers who will retire or die in the next decade. Resource extraction will require additional skilled workers.

So, it makes sense to me that the resource extraction companies must also commit funds to help train skilled workers who are Canadians or immigrants..

Pat Bell is an arrogant bully, even among a clique of arrogant bullies.

I do not expect to ever see him humble enough to just be truthful and get responsible for his own crap. This is just such a good example; thank you CKNW for making this video available.

@Cin_3294 Pat Bell and risky Clark have the same problem, arrogance.

I suspect no one has difficulty with efforts to bring work into Canada and possibly even some foreign workers provided it happens within the parameters of the law; I can see circumstances where a company wants to have certain workers oversee a project.

The problem here is with the transparency. Liberals would not find themselves in hot water, if they had been more honest, instead they obstructed efforts to get at the truth. Therein lies the problem.
