BC's Jobs Minister is admitting people have lost confidence in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program after the HD Mining controversy.

Pat Bell says it is clear the company fell short in looking for qualified Canadian miners before bringing in Chinese workers.

"The public needs to have confidence that any jobs that are allowed to be taken by, particularily temporary workers I think there is a difference between that and immigrants, need to truly be unfillable by British Columbians and by Canadians and that has clearly not been the case here and we have all learned that."

Bell says the Temporary Foreign Worker Program needs to be fixed, "There is no question people are angry and I accept that, we accept that. I think that is why when Minister Finley steps up and says we are going to do a review of the program, we agree with that. I am clearly on record saying that I think it is appropriate because when people lose confidence in a process like the Federal Government have with the temporary foreign workers, you need to revisit that and make sure that is regained"

HD Mining was forced by the Court to hand over hundreds of resumes from rejected Canadian workers.

Meanwhile, The President of the BC Federation of Labour says his jaw hit the floor hearing Pat Bell admit HD Mining failed to look for qualified Canadian miners.

Jim Sinclair says for the Minister and his Government, it is a dramatic turnaround, "This Minister just admitted that the Provincial Government agrees with the unions that this Temporary Foreign Worker Program failed; that British Columbians should have been given those jobs and they weren't. That is a 150 degrees from where they were a week ago defending the project and Christy Clark defending the use of temporary foreign workers in northern British Columbia."

Sinclair says the Province got caught backing a "bad horse" in HD Mining. He says it is time for the mining company to work with the unions to make the Tumbler Ridge mine work.

The NDP are also calling Bell's most recent comments on the HD Mining temporary foreign worker program controversy a complete turn around.

Shane Simpson says the BC Government and Minister Bell defended HD Mining until it became obvious the company was in the wrong.

"It is only now that those resumes have come to light that it has become clear that this system is not working it has failed and that there Canadians and British Columbians who could have done that work and didn't get the opportunity that they are having to walk this thing back now I think it was a complete admission that this system is broken it has failed."

Simpson says the temporary foreign worker program needs to be fixed to address a looming labour shortage.

He says he has yet to hear anything from the province to indicate they will be part of finding a solution.

Mr. Bell has an astute grasp of the obvious. What's next? Will he finally discover that thing between his eyes is actually his nose?

It must' be such a disappointment for those, including contributors to this forum, who have fiercely defended HD Mining and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to hear Jobs Minister Pat Bell pull the rug out from underneath them.

Well, it is about time that the provincial government has finally seen the light. But, to be fair, the provincial government may have had its heart in the right place. Better late than never. What has evolved is the reality that China and Chinese corporations do not necessarily act in the slightest interest of British Columbia or Canadian workers.

As we move forward, hopefully there are lessons to be learned by our governments-regardless of stripe.

As suggested earlier by Insite, there was more to this story. How true!

The BC and Federal Governments have a moral obligation to all Canadians to ensure that we take care of our own people first. And if there are no Canadians available, then we ought to take in new immigrants. Temporary foreign workers have no rights and are exploited for one reason; low wages. Maybe it's time to oust these governments in Victoria and Ottawa and bring in temporary foreign politicians from Denmark, Sweden or Norway? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Ok -there's the first step-admitting there is a problem.

Now lets dig a bit deeper and find out which government employee profited from HD Mining ,because you know that the company wouldn't have tried this without some assurance from the government that their plans wouldn't be opposed

This is yet another Liberal supported brain phart that must be discussed and reversed. Their sucess rate is running about a dismal 8-0. They(Liberals)just don't have a clue what the public wants, and much of what they pull off is highly illegal, right from the road side checks to the Bassi - Virk pay off. It is inevitable, both issues will get changed, and it could very well cost the tax payer a small fortune! HST, LCB, etc.etc.

@RegA [deleted] You do realize that the Foreign Worker program is a Federal one, right? Just saying.....

What is most interesting is that this is federal justidction and there is nothing from the Harrpies.
The Chinese Government wants all Canada's resources at the cheapest possible prices they do not care about the working conditionds of thier own people why would they care about ours.

If anyone wants my two cents worth, I say that all the jobs and training should go exclusivley to FIRST NATIONS of BC . The training can start right away and the Company can benefit from local, hardworking people while not being saddled with a Union which is what I believe they were trying to avoid. First Nations Leaders and Elders can act as the intermediary and negotiate with HD MINING and provide all the candidates for the Mining Company. A win, Win for all involved.
