Three independent MLA's are calling for democratic reform in Victoria.

They want bans on union and corporate donations to political parties, moving the fixed election date to the fall, and Elections B-C oversight of party leadership contests.

Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson says there were irregularities in both the Liberal and NDP leadership races.

He says, "the revelation that a cat had a membership, the revelation that some of the memberships were actually had addresses that were at a restaurant, in the case of the NDP the questions surrounding the boxes of memberships and the bags of money, there have long been questions surrounding the nature of those memberships."

MLA's Vicki Huntington and John Van Dongen are also backing the proposed changes.

Absolutely yes. Same think for municipal election as union donate to candidates which support them. Its conflict of interest to say at least. Union supporters voting union friendly candidates and ruling city halls. More property taxes for union wage increases.

Prohibiting donations from anyone is a bit of slippery slope, because government is telling private organizations what they can use their money for. However, given the constant whining on this topic, I think it should be implemented and we can see if the promised utopian voting structure will develop. I am skeptical because the problem today is that no party can get elected without promising to splash money around as if there are endless amounts available. I don't think that will change by restricting donations.

On the leadership contests, this is a slippery slope. It means heading down the US road of people being "registered" Liberals, Conservatives, Village Idiots, er, the NDP, etc. Not sure that a couple of cats voting is enough reason to change-my cats vote all the time. As for restaurants being the address of a party member, lots of people get their mail directed to their business. Many self employed people spend a lot of time at their business (and for the benefit of the public sector union types, that is not 8-5 M-F).

@Jartann The 747 is waiting for you and that Eastern politics you are trying to sell people! This as you want to bring our country down to a third level standard that treat your fellows like subservient to achieve your end of total domination of our Country! You Mr. Jar fulofnuts just take a flying **** at your face and leave! Your extreme right wing measures and statements are enough to make soldiers turn over in their graves. This is Canada a**h**e and we did look after each other and became one of the riches countries in the world we brought waves of Immegants here and they became Canadians above all else, Now I just wonder why, wages and low standards of living and this run away race to the bottom. Now I know it's people like you that think you are superior and want us different, than when we made this country attractive to come and live, soon people will come and move back very quickly, unless they are rich and this is your master plan. You Sir, are a bigot and a zealot and hide in silence! Go NDP Go

I suspect the only one that will peak the interest of the Liberals will be to agree to moving the fixed election date...and before May.
