It took nine hours and went until 3:30am, but in the end the Vancouver Park Board voted to back a controverisal policy to centralize community centre services.

All five Vision Commisioners voted for while the two NPA members voted against.

One of them Melissa De Genova who said it is a cash grab, that will become policy.

And she says, "I think that they will ram it through it all costs because they have their eye on the cash and they see that the community centres generate a lot of cash."

Vision Commissioner Niki Sharma says that is not true, "there is some misinformation about our goals we arenot...our goal is not  to grab money or to remove volunteer boards from the Centres."

An angry crowd forced two recesses to try restore calm, and Vancouver Police were even called in.

The people left standing after the marathon meeting at the West End Community Center, left angry.

Attendees were unhappy with the long meeting which saw some of the 73 scheduled speakers go home before it was over.

"I think it would have preferrable to adjourn the meeting at an earlier time and had another date....I am not very happy with it......They just showed that they really didn't really care.....The entire process has been rushed and there defintely needs to be more consultation on it."

Almost 50 speakers did make it to the mic with the vast majority telling the Park Board they are opposed to centralizing community centre services.

Meanwhile, the the community centres issue could wind up in City Council chambers.

Green Party Councillor Adrianne Carr says she is worried the Park Board move might have an impact on Vancouver taxpayers.

She says, "the purpose of my motion is to make sure that at the City Council table which is where we are responsible for the City's budget, we know the potential financial impacts of the Park Board's plan to centralize the control of community centres out of the hands of the Community Centre Associations."

Carr says those associations pay for a lot of things which taxpayers might end up being on the hook for.

She will table her motion February 12th.

They may have won the battle but Vision has likely just lost the war- even. Dix will feel the heat from this !

      @ChrisM_18 Ya...punish Dix! That will really show...Vision?
Do you get that provincial and municipal branches of government (including the political parties involved) have no connection?

Congratulations to Vancouver’s Vision. You have clearly demonstrated what those that follow the progressive movement are all about; gain power then ram your philosophy down the throats of the people. Individuals that comprise and support parties like Vision consider themselves to be the elite of our society. They are elite in name only.

These individuals know better than the rest of us and wish to make sure we live our lives according to their philosophy. They tell us what kind of light bulbs we should use, what kind of car we should or shouldn’t drive, what foods we should eat, how we should heat our homes and how we should spend our money. They are invasive dictators. If you don’t follow their rules, you are to be punished.

“Visionaries” are not a fan of successful people that have money; unless they are members of their movement. If you have money, it should be redistributed to those that don’t; again unless you are a member of their movement. They love democracy; until they gain power and as long as the majority agrees with them. When the majority disagrees with them, for the betterment of our society, they have to be controlled and educated. Facts are only there to be manipulated for ‘the cause’. Facts that disagree with their vision are only inconvenient truths; to be conveniently ignored. 2 Vancouver’s Vision is a microcosm of what currently infests the White House, infects the mindset of many citizens to the south of our country and is currently destroying many European societies. To a progressive, freedom means the freedom to agree with them.

Thank you Vision for showing surrounding communities your idea of how to run a local government. Thank you for clearly demonstrating to us what it would be like if we had one local government, police force or other bureaucracy governing the Lower Fraser Valley. You think TransLink is a problem; imagine what it would be like to have a whole bunch of ‘TransLinks’ governing every aspect of our lives. Look up the definition of fascism; the real one, not the manufactured one that applies the term only to so-called right-wing governments. It will tell you what Vision is all about.

@BCSkulker Vision Vancouver , provincial NDP , Federal NDP .. all come from the same part of the gene pool , all driven by the same lofty goals of centralized control

@BCSkulker I totally agree with you, fascist always believe they know what is best for the masses, after all they are the chosen ones.

This council has an NDP philosophy and if anyone thinks if the NDP are elected provincially in May will operate different then the last brain dead politicians think again they will do what politicians do best push their philosophies down our throat.

So, city staff (who, collectively, have about as much common sense as the fruit flies you find buzzing around the bottom of your red wine glass' last drops) will now have the power and money to decide what is going on in each centre and dictate how they want things done? Even though most of them probably don't even live in Vancouver and have no idea of what each individual community needs? What will happen to the hundreds of different VOLUNTEERS who give up their time to help put on events for THEIR community, people like the ones who stayed at this meeting for hours not to be heard. They'll quit. Way to go city staff, way to go.

    Greedy pigs at the trough!
The only thing they could see was the funds available form the various groups that manage their budgets and fund raising properly!
They absolutely do not care about the community and anything they said in regards to this issue is nothing but lip service. They do not care!
Remember their names. These fools need to be voted out. They are and always have been out of control!
This is outrageous and cannot be condoned.
Vancouver Parks Board has a tainted history folks and all they want is as much money as they can get regardless of how they get it. They need to be audited and soon!
    Makes me ill!

So disappointed in our Park Board. I voted for them. There is a proper process for engaging the City's residents. They may believe their plan is right, but they have chosen to not listen to the vast majority whom they are supposed to represent, and instead are ramming their plan down our throats.

@Harold_K remember this socialist agenda when next you vote , sociialist want everyone to be the same for all of us except them , they know best ,they deserve top salaries, they don’t have to live in the city to know what we need and to vote in their ideas .
Remember its all about what they want chickens in the back yard, bike lanes that make no sense, neglected vegetable beds in front of city hall, best of all how to distribute other people funds.

Is this the way of the future.
Is this how it’s going to be run by little dictators?
