Metro Vancouver directors defend move to maintain pay rate for attending conferences

Directors on Metro Vancouver boards are defending their unanimous decision made Friday to maintain existing pay rates, instead of lowering them, for attending conferences and conventions.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says dropping the current pay of $346 per meeting to $100 wouldn't be in line with other boards.

"I'm not aware of any that get a lower rate than the Metro Vancouver directors."

Brodie says Translink and BC Ferries directors are paid around $1,200 for similar meetings.

He adds Metro Vancouver directors aren't in it for the money – they just want fair pay for their time.

"they just want fair pay for their time".

And we just want fair value for our tax dollars. Quoting the outrageous rates paid for the directors of Translink and BCFerries who have driven both organizations into the hole by their incompetence isn't a good plan.

@SlimP_9860 Time to have the Municipal Auditor investigate this parasitic activity.

What a crock this is, do not get sucked in CKNW, they are in it for the money because they do not have any. They are all always looking for free food also, they should have to brown bag it. The Translink Board is over paid by $1000 and fact is they are not qualified to be on the Board in the first place!

@KenL_6250 ALSo if you are going to a tranSTINK meeting
YOU should be REQUIRED to get there using TRANSIT ONLY!!
And you hae to PAY for it YOURSELF!!!

      Too many meeting
annd NO GOOD IDEAS OR GOOD USE OF TAX DOLLARS!!

@KenL_6250 You have no idea what the duties of the Board are, what the job descriptions for Directors are, who the individual Directors are, where they came from, what their resumes look like, what hours they work, what they are paid, what they have for lunch, or who makes it for them.

Until you know ALL of these things, please shut up about them.

This aligns with the adage "two wrongs don't make a right"

Mayor Brodie wasn't thinking too hard when he made the comparison

They are only in it for the money. They put this money aside separately and then spend it on a nice vacation with their family without having to use vacation money from their regular jobs.

@joes_2868 It's none of your business what they do with their money, just as it is nobody else's business what you do with yours.

Getting paid to attend these meetings is a form of double dipping, They're already getting their salaries from their various cities/municipalities so they should either forego their pay for these meetings, return it to the taxpayer's of the area they represent or deduct their meeting time from their annual salary. Metro is just another excuse for politicians to line their pockets. Personally I believe that the reason there is such resistance from our local politicians to form a Regional police service is because they know it might be the beginning of the end of their cash cow. Could Regionalization of the area be far behind then and many would be out of work. Regionalization would mean that Metro could be folded, it`s a fourth level of government that wouldn`t be needed, just like all other large areas of Canada. Do I hear efficiency and cost savings??? Get on with it, Christy!!!!!! Or will this joke continue????????

Nothing but greed from Municipal politicians; they should be attending for free, after all they do get a salary from their respective municipalities. It is part of their job!

    Shame, Shame.

@StephenG_3 Very few municipal elected officials are paid full time; therefore attending Metro Board meeting is probably extra work, and they should be paid accordingly. Would you work scheduled overtime for free? I doubt it!

Mayors and municipalities are going NUTS with our TAX DOLLARS!
Municipalities give OUR MONEY to new Muni groups and Unions
They take trips to other places to 'meet and research' BSBSBSBSBS
More waste than any useful or GOOD progress!!!!!
grow growth growth burn it down and build it up - OOOH LOOK AT HOW MUCH WE'VE done for you!!!!!
    - nevermind we have no roads/transit/schools/or other basic municipal needs - JUST AS LONG AS THESE SHELFISH TROLLS CAN STEAL FROM THE TAX PAYERS AND JUSTIFY IT BY COMPARING THEMSELVES TO OTHER CRIMINAL POLITICOS!

$346/meeting?? and FREE FOOD? and most likely car allowance too!!!
HOLY CRAP BC - are we gonna stay bent over and keep taking it?????

Aren't meetings part of their JOBS?????
WTFAKE is going on out there????
WHY are we buying their BS?????

@speakup Agreed! Municipal politicians have become totally irresponsible.
  9. DavidSB posted on 01/26/2013 02:36 PM
I agree. Give them fair pay. Minimum wage it is. That's what they would give the peasants and if we complained they would say, "Go find another job, nobody is forcing you to work there!"

This double dippng could only happen in the public sector. Where I use to work and I was in sales if we had meetings we did not get paid to go it was part of our job! what these freeloaders need is a job description and they must adhere to it. You want to serve the public? you get your paycheck, meetings should be part of your job. Anyway of finding out how much each year is spent both provincially and by municipal politicians on pay for meetings?
    1. speakup posted on 01/27/2013 11:18 AM
@brianp1950 yes - job description would help for ALL these public employees who don;t even understand or except the term EMPLOYEES!

BUT - alas - what would it really matter
they would just vote themselves in a new job description
along with more bonuses and higher pay......ho hum

AND - didn't they just appoint a new positon of municpal government watchdog - or something?

Well, the TransDink & BC Fairies boards also get paid too much for attending meetings! Have any of you heard of Skype? eMeetings? How many of TransDink's board members take transit to their meetings? The arrogance of these board members is mind boggling. They just love pocketing our money in order to decide how much more of our money they can spend!!
    1. speakup posted on 01/27/2013 11:21 AM
@AndreaK_5056 ALL tranSTINk (or I like yours too - DINK) members/employees SHOULD be REQUIRED to ONLY take tranSTINk to ALL meeting and work functions!

HOW DARE they try to FORCE us onto TranSCRAP but they get PAID to drivwe their cars!!!!! I would NOT be surprised if we pay their bridge tolls too!!!! gggrrrrrrrrr (makes me mad noises!)
  12. AlfredO posted on 01/26/2013 06:13 PM
Translink and BC Ferries are continually dinging us for more money because they can't seem to get a handle on a thing called fiscal restraint, so using them as an example is a poor argument. If these directors are already being paid then it's part of your job and you shouldn't be double dipping.
