Updated: Clark government spends 12 million dollars on "copycat" awards show

We could have hosted the real Bollywood Oscars *after* the provincial election.

Instead, the Liberal government is spending 12 million dollars on a so-called "copycat" award show in Vancouver just six weeks before the May vote.

And the timing may have been a key factor in the government's decision.

The brand new Times of India Film awards take place on April sixth, as opposed to the long standing International Indian Film Academy Awards, or "Eye-fa's", the so-called Bollywood Oscars.

That awards show is held in the summer, after the provincial election on May 14th.

CKNW contributor Bob Mackin spoke to Sabbas Joseph, whose company stages the IIFA's, about BC's failed bid.
Joseph indicates timing was an issue.

"We were doing it post-election. That is the normal schedule of the IIFA's."

While Premier Clark is touting the economic benefits of hosting the awards, she may also hope to personally benefit from colourful photo ops generated by the taxpayer funded awards just six weeks before the provincial election.

The NDP's Tourism and Arts critic is crying foul,  saying the Premier is using the Times of India Awards show as nothing more than a re-election gimmick.

Spencer Chandra-Herbert says the motivation is clear in going with a lesser awards show just six days before the election writ is dropped.

"This is doing what Christy thinks is right for herself and her government to get re-elected."

Chandra-Herbert can't believe the government spent taxpayer money negotiating with the 'real' Indian oscars show only to ditch it because it would  fall after May's election.

"I don't understand how a government can think they can get away with this kind of crap because we want trade with India but you don't do it just to hope that you can help yourself get re-elected you do it because you want it for the best of British Columbia."

The Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills training has issued a statement in response to questions about the Times of India Film Awards.

The ministry says the times group approached the province with the proposal, promising to hold several major events in Vancouver in the build-up to the show, and an audience of 200 million people for the actual broadcast.

The statement also says the BC bid for the actual Bollywood Oscars was not in line with the financial support required by Wizcraft, and that the Times of India proposal was a more favourable deal for taxpayers.

The statement does not address the issue of timing for the spring show versus a post-election Bollywood Oscars.

After issuing the statement Jobs and Tourism minister Pat Bell was on CKNW denying that politics were at work in the government's surprise decision to spend up to 12 million dollars hosting the first ever Times of India awards ceremony in Vancouver just six weeks before the provincial election.

Bell told CKNW's Simi Sara today the Times of India film awards were simply cheaper to secure than the more established International Indian Film Academy awards.

Simi Sara "You're saying it was just money, are you saying definitively that timing was not an issue, that the fact the other words would have been in june or july, that didn't factor into this?"

Pat Bell "No that's correct simi so the financial aspect of our negotiations with wizcraft who holds the IIFA awards did not get a place we were comfortable with, so I had a very specific mandate from treasury board that i was to negotiate to, and we were unable to meet that mandate."

Simi Sara "Okay, so just money."

Pat Bell "That's correct."

Bell says the government is trying to send a message to India that B.C is serious about increasing trade with the country.

Uh huh..and the cknw poll shows 55% of British Columbians can't wait to vote for the Liberals in May. And I've got a bridge over the Fraser River to sell you, and it has no tolls, or ice bombs, lol.....

@cherylb_2696 CKNW is Snookums shrill.....did you happen to hear the phone calls Dix had to face this morning? All of them should have been cut off for rudeness towards Dix.....I hold Good 100 pct. accountable....snookie would never have to face that type of abuse it was embarrassing.

CKNW is not anywhere close to reporting fair and equal.

This is the icing on the cake. Chubby Clark has done herself no favors...if the Indian community can see through her crap what do you thing the average tax payers see? This is a slap in the Indo communities face. Blatantly using them for personal gain. This government needs to re open the legislature
...it's time for an immediate recall....the utter abuse of taxpayers money is enough ....everyone in this province should be outraged and collectively boycott the event. Imagine, 12 million dollars for education, the medical system, the elderly or homeless....she does not care about anyone but herself....
Ask yourself where this money magically appeared when we were unable to give our needed anesthiologists, doctors, teachers, ambulatory care workers any sort of reasonable increase....it's criminal...they must be decimated next election.

      @taxed to death Well said.
      My thoughts exactly.
Millions of dollars wasted for self promotion, all those personal trips to Asia, doing nothing to stop the rampant increase in the cost of living, the quality or level of services continuously decreasing or disappearing, etc, etc, etc.

Greed breeds corruption. Is that simple.

Mackin is a Leftoid writing head whose narratives are flowers to the ears of the NDP and gratitude from Simi Sara whose comment clearly demonstrates her leftish propaganda.

Fact is the initial submission for one of the East Indian awards shows was rejected and another came to the front. In either case such would provide economic advantage to British Columbia through jobs, media attention and world exposure.

But Makin and Simi Sara failed to underline the positives and only the negatives. The Simi Sara show with Bob Mackin was highly focused to support the NDP and was not non-partisan; Simi failed to state reality and made up nothing but leftist propaganda.

@StephenG_3 I'd like you to briefly outline the long term sustainable jobs this will
Create In aiding the province of BC for years to come...NOT temporary employment, that is not a job....remember this is a one time event.

It's all fluff , optimism, and unrealistic expectations by a floundering government grasping at straws....it was a bad financial investment that has pissed off the public...

Bill Good is a moron! I stopped listening to NW a few years ago and I decided that they were not fair and reasonable when it came to the Libeals and now with Clarke, as for the 12 million dollars, another waste of money. We are in deep doodoo if these guys get reelected.

So Ontario spent $12 million and hosted the IIFA which is the Bollywood equivalent of the Hollywood Oscars. Ontario got a world-class event for its investment.

Our government is going to spend $12 million on a second-rate, copy-cat version event which is unproven and has never been held before.

It is surprising indeed that this fiscally prudent government (according to ex-FM Kevin Falcon) would now take on the risks of hosting an unknown entity. No wonder he bailed out.

But, to host this copy-cat event just before the election is a shrewd political move. Just think and visualize the thousands of buses pulling up to BC Place filled with Bollywood fans.

@insite Excellent point....it is incumbent upon the government to
Invest our tax dollars wisely....in other words...proven,guaranteed
Investment with a reasonable rate of return...it's simple economics.

This is completely new and unproven without history. Beyond that
From an economical standpoint the government is well aware of the
Inability to calculate the return on investment for this type of event.
We know it will never create any long term full time sustainable jobs or permanent employment...it's money that could have been spent
Wisely towards British columbians directly in need...

Trust me this will backfire and have a complete negative effect. Christy Clark is a sociopathic narsasiatic

CherylB_2686: My first comment was in regards to Ken280. Say something wrong that he does not agree with you on and you will meet him.
Back to the polling. Nine elections have come and gone across Canada and not one of them proved right.
Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, showed the official oppostion parties with double digit figures over the incumbent governments just as is in B.C. today.
On election day, all three incumbent governments were returned to another term of government.

I have written to Mario at Angus Reid saying that his polls are not accurate.

The only way to poll is to poll all 85 ridings, riding by riding, not a phone call here and there in every part of the province.

Example: NDP Jenny Kwan riding. The poll would show NDP. LIBERAL Rich Coleman riding. The poll would show LIBERAL.

Take time to do a poll and do a survey of 1000 replies in each of the 85 ridings. Tally up the results for a result polling.

The polling has to be done during all hours of the day to get a more accurate result than what Mario at Angus Reid is getting.

Start polling at 8 AM and go onto 10PM at night.

I have already done my statistical information and the NDP can only form government in B.C. with 49% or more of the popular vote. If I don't see the 49% figure, then the B.C. Liberals will be returned to government.

From 1952 to 2013, B.C. would have had a total of 13 years of NDP governments and 48 years of coalition governments. All governments are the same in general, except some are better than others.

I really don't understand how someone would vote in a NDP government when in fact they would never take back a former spouse from a previous divorce to re-create the nightmare.

Some are saying that the Liberals have been in too long. How is this when next door the Alberta taxpayers are now in their 42nd year of conservative government.

Here in B.C. the vote is polarized. Too many taxpayers go to the voting booth to vote for the party they had no intention of voting for but vote this way to avoid the other party to form government.

If taxpayers went to the voting booth and voted for who they really wanted to, Liberal, NDP, Conservative, Green, etc, you can assure yourself that whoever won government, would only be at a MINORITY STATUS.

In conclusion, if the Liberals have to go, fine, but the NDP is not the answer. Someone has to come up with a third party choice, not the B.C. Conservatives.

They did that in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan party is not in its second term of government.

Keeping both the Liberals and NDP out of majority government might do a lot of good for everyone in the world of politics.

A poll is a poll and even if my idea of a poll above was done, it is still only a poll.

THERE IS ONLY ONE POLL. THAT IS ON ELECTION DAY.

Nice to hear that you are an ordinary person like me.

    Have a nice weekend!

I thought that this was a good event for BC even though the financial cupboards are bare because I thought it was an existing awards ceremony. However, I just heard on the news that this is a new first time award show created by a Southeast Asian marketing company. The Bollywood "Oscars were hosted by Ontario for $12 million so why could BC not get them for a similar investment. Oh, wait, they are held after the election. . .interesting timing. . .

The rumour swirling around is that this is a just a ploy to garner votes from the Southeast Asian community.

The local film industry contributes almost $20 billion to BC's economy yet the government does nothing to keep the industry here. The industry is now employing only 50% of the people working in the industry here. The film industry is asking for another $50 million in tax credits and I think the government should give it to them.

The film and gaming industries are and should be treated as very important industries for BC to hold onto. Or are the Liberals upset because this is a tax credit implemented by the NDP back in the 1990's in order to grow the industry in BC and grow it did. From $1 billion to almost $20 billion being contributed to BC's economy.

Where is the free enterprise party now?
