Proposed casino project voted down by Surrey council will not go to another area of the municipality

After a proposed casino and entertainment complex was nixed by Surrey City Council early Saturday morning, BC’s Minister responsible for gaming says the complex will not go to another location in the city.

Rich Coleman says the city has indicated it's not interested after saying no to the complex on a property that is already zoned for a casino.

He says there's nowhere else in Surrey zoned for that use, so looking at another location in that city would mean starting back at the zoning process.

"It's always been the policy in gaming for us that we don't go into a community or force something on a community that don't want it. So they've indicated to us they don't want it, so we'll be done with that."

Coleman says he's disappointed for Surrey that the complex won't be built.

As for other locations, Colemany says they "have had inquiries from some first nations and some other communities as to whether we would consider them.  But that's too early in the game to even think about."

After two public hearings went for hours, council voted against the one-hundred-million dollar complex that would have been near 10th Avenue and 168th Street.

Sounds to me like some developer is going to take a bath

@ChrisM_18 So I guess those in high places that got paid off to aid and assist the rezoning will have to return the payola, huh? Don't forget, the Mayor broke the tie vote, and there is a myriad of city employees in the Planning Department. Certainly there would have been massive rezoning fees paid to the city, too?

@ChrisM_18 Ah yes the X-RCMP member Rich Coleman, now the Minister of Everything and most likely advisor and tarot card reader to Shirley Bond.

Well heck yes you can place your casino deals where the sun does not shine.

Not in Surrey in particular South Surrey and hope you enjoy your fat indexed pension after the next election!!

How dare you try and make the citizens of Surrey and their duly elected Mayor and Council guilty in the various media with your sour comments.

Rather than Regional Policing we are again stuck with the Wal Mart of policing for the next 20 years.

So long to bad rubbish I say in the next election Rich and thanks for selling us out to the socialist alternative in 2013.

o Watts really can make a decision! The location for the new Casino was excellent; close to a major highway, very rural area and close to the US border. This could have been a real tourist boon for Surrey. So Watts votes to not bring huge tax revenue and job's to Surrey....Just what we want from a leader.......Too bad she can't make a decision to enforce her own illegal suite and building bylaws.......But all will be fine because Watts will just continue to raise property taxes in her city .......Big loss for Surrey will be a gift for Maple Ridge or Abbotsford. It's amazing how NIMBY works when you have money!!!!

Yes the good Mayor said there were so many people who didn't want the Casino. 5000 is a lot of people. A lot compared to what. What is the population of Surrey. Sounds to me that she was paid off. Some people are just against everything. Most of the people at the meeting seemed to be the white haired set with nothing more to do than oppose everything.

The Lie-bral government of B.C. doesn't like it when the endless source of money a.k.a. the taxpayers do not do as they are expected. How dare they have an opinion and express it! I think that somehow the people of Surrey will pay for that exhibition of democracy and opinion by the Lie-bral government suddenly cancelling funding of some sort. The people of Surrey won't get off that easy.

The land is not zoned casino, it is zoned for commercial/retail business.
Which includes hotels. And a casino/hotel was proposed.

If the residents of south Surrey think this land will be left bare, as they want. They all better pool their funds and purchase the land. It will be developed. Just no casino.

The south of Surrey think they are elite, remember WATTS lives in Morgan Creek, which is in south Surrey.

Looks like a rigged vote to me. WATTs breaks the tie to be the hero! And will raise taxes based upon her doing what the people want.

WATTS can't even enforce her own secondary suite policy. That she drafted!!

I'll bet you, a case of Rich Colemans donuts, that there will eventually be a casino on the Semiamoo band lands. I can see it now, B.C.'s only Casino on the waterfront. So, folks, Rich and his band of smiling thugs will get there way. Only thing is, the good folks of White Rock just took one for the team!

I just can't help but compare Watts decision to someone winning a lottery for life and declining to collect. I live near the formerly proposed casino site and would likely have been impacted by it with extra traffic. I don't gamble, I don't even play cards, however, for the better of Surrey I was willing to overlook that. So for the sake of maybe 5% of the voters in Surrey, we lose a golden opportunity to finance schools, rec. centres etc. And I just wonder how many of those 5,000 residents came from perhaps a neighboring city known to house, as they call it in Vancouver, creme de la creme????? Just asking.......You just can't make this stuff up.

Instead of a casino, maybe they could put up a shack and sell fireworks and cheap cigarettes.
