Developing: Premier hopes Auditor General will stay on
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

Premier Christy Clark says the process of selecting an Auditor General must be changed.

But it's not clear if that means the current auditor will keep his job.

In her first news conference of the year, Clark says the current process of choosing the Auditor-General is profoundly flawed.

That process sees an all-party committee appoint an auditor for a six year term, which can be renewed.

Clark says that should be changed to an eight year non-renewable term and government will bring in legislation to that effect in the coming session.

"We give the Auditor-General appropriate time to be able to pursue the matter that he or she believes need to be looked into without worrying about whether or not they will be rehired."

Clark says she hopes the committee that meets today in Vancouver will follow her lead and reappoint current Auditor-General John Doyle for another two years, but it's up to them.

The Premier was also asked about the liberal party's decision not to renew the nomination of Boundary-Similkameen MLA John Slater.

"Well, I don't know that it's been any particular secret.  And my job as a leader, as a premier, is to present the absolute best team of people to British Columbians that we can field in the election."

Slater admits he's had problems with drinking, but he says that's behind him, adding he's been outspoken, which the party didn't like.

@taxed to death A true socialist who has no respect for an elected Government and its leader unless it is their own. Your comment stinks.

So after 8 years how is one then appointed? More politics is played then.
  3. insite posted on 01/16/2013 11:27 AM
Actually, the process is not flawed. There is nothing that requires correcting except for the need to eliminate the apparent vindictiveness demonstrated by the Liberal members.

The only sensible option is pull back on the recruitment campaign and put it off until after the May election.

And during the election campaign, each leader should be required to categorically indicate if he or she, if in government, will offer Mr. Doyle an extension for another 6 years.

Any tinkering of the process now will only be seen for what it is... A desperate and thinly disguised move by the Liberals which does little to hide their true colours.
    1. commonsense posted on 01/16/2013 11:57 AM
@insite The only problem I see with that is how an entire election campaign will be tied around this. What if both parties say no to re-appointing? What if the other party just says yes to gain votes. It won't remove the politics from it.

I think an AG should be given a maximum term and then after there must be a new AG.
    2. commonsense posted on 01/16/2013 05:47 PM
@insite What about an AG who steps down? Is there a campaign for who they would appoint? It's kind of like Senators being appointed by the government.

I can just see bias amongst this from an election campaign. Bias from the AG that is.

I concur INSITE and declarations by ELECTED Party leaders should be taken to task. Furthermore, if I am not mistaken - two of the Liberal hacks who voted in favor of Doyle being replaced - Lekstrom and Krueger - neither are up for re-election, therefore they should NOT be allowed to vote on the matter given that they have no vested interest OTHER THAN providing SWEETENER to their already ridiculous pension packages.

How come the brightest and the best always screw it up. Here is snookums trying to, with the help of the LIE BERAL spin doctors, trying to spin yet another Davey Crocket story about the AG..And any of these LIE BERALS having anything to say about drinking. WOW. I seem to remember when "THE TOWN DRUNK: before he was officialy "THE TOWN DRUNK" (that doesn't include the employees at city hall that watched him when he was mayor. He was officially "THE TOWN DRUNK" then) Having anything to say about booze. I seem to remember "THE TOWN DRUNK" made two of the LIEING LIE BERALS step down after they were caught driving. Of course that all changed in Hawaii.

@BY At least the Liberals did not steal money from charities to support their own people. Forging documents is a crime. failure to present your transit ticket is fineable. I could go on and on. Campbell was not the Town Drunk you claim he was. That is a very slanderous comment.

@BY In order for someone to be the town drunk they consistently need to be drunk. Your pet name for him is a flaw.

DenisL_3: Excellent comments. I still remember when the NDP Nanaimo Commonwealth Society ran a charity raffle and the total proceeds went right into the bank account with no funds to the charities. Dave Stupich, former NDP finance minister was charged and Bruce Ralston apologized. The NDP party today would have better credentials if Dix, Farnworth, and Ralson, were out of the party, thus eliminating the baggage.
  7. RoseH_1028 posted on 01/16/2013 12:49 PM
It seems like the staunch NDP supporters are into the name calling. They never have anything constructive to say. They must have a very limited vocabulary.
The NDP were involved in more crooked schemes than any other party has ever been. I guess if Campbells shortcomings are piled onto Christie so should the shortcomings of the previous NDP governments be piled onto Dix.
Dix was also part and party to the crooked dealings that went on. Now he is all soft spoken and trying to convey the lily white image.

This person (Doyle) will be around long after "Snookums" She will be looking for work after this coming election in May. When she called the Press Conference, I thought she was going to announce that she is resigning and call for new Leadership Convention to maybe inject new blood into the dismal party that she represents.Otherise, sure as hell, it will the NDP and they will really make the people of BC to suffer.

RalphL_2: Readers, here we go again. Shooting off from the hip and blowing gaskets without thinking. Typical NDP policy.
Ralph, whatever the outcome of which party forms government on May 14, 2013, Christy Clark will be the MLA for Vancouver Point Grey.
Adrian Dix says the provincial election will be a nail biter.
Ken280, the readers consultant with a briefcase 50 miles away from home says that the NDP will be government.
Ralph, if you would have done your homework, you would see that the NDP with 48% of the popular vote will remain as the official opposition party in B.C.
You better start working to get this number up to 49% plus, because if you don't, your NDP will stay on the same side of the house they are on now.

THIS WEBSITE SURE CATERS TO NDP DAMAGE CONTROL!

    ARE THE NDP THAT WORRIED?

FROM THE GLOBE AND MAIL: MANITOBA GOVERNMENT TO ONCE AGAIN CHANGE LAW TO PROTECT CABINET PAY, BY STEVE LAMBERT, PUBLISHED DEC 13, 2012.

THE MANITOBA GOVERNMENT WILL ONCE AGAIN CHANGE ITS BALANCED BUDGET LAW TO EASE THE PAY CUTS CABINET MINISTERS FACE FOR RUNNING DEFICITS.

UNDER PROVINCIAL LAW, THE TOP-UP SALARY THAT CABINET MINISTERS RECEIVE-SEPARATE FROM THE BASE SALARY GIVEN TO ALL LEGISLATURE MEMBERS-IS CUT BY 20 PER CENT FOR A FIRST ANNUAL DEFICIT AND 40 PER CENT FOR EVERY CONSECUTIVE DEFICIT THEREAFTER. IN 2010, THE NDP GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED IT WOULD START RUNNING DEFICITS UNTIL 2015, AND SUSPENDED MANY ASPECTS OF THE BALANCED BUDGET LAW, INCLUDING PAY CUT. CABINET MINISTERS THEN TOOK A VOLUNTARY 20-PER CENT CUT UNTIL 2015. THIS WEEK, THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED IT WOULD RUN DEFICITS FOR TWO MORE YEARS-UNTIL 2017.

NDP PREMIER GREG SELINGER CONFIRMED THURSDAY THE LAW WILL BE CHANGED SO THAT THE PAY CUT REMAINS AT 20 PER CENT, NOT 40 PER CENT, UNTIL 2017.

"THAT'S THE PLAN, YES," MR. SELINGER SAID IN AN INTERVIEW FROM MINNEAPOLIS, WHERE HE WAS ATTENDING A FORUM ON WATER QUALITY. "THERE WILL BE A REDUCTION OF THE CABINET MINISTERS' SALARIES IN THE ORDER OF 20 PER CENT TO REFLECT THE FACT WE'RE NOT BACK IN BALANCE."

THE CANADIAN TAXPAYERS FEDERATION SAID IT WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN THE PAY-CUT PENALTLY WAS AGAIN BEING TINKERED WITH.

"IT'S A LITTLE BIT LIKE THE PREMIER HAVING THE ABILITY TO RIP UP HIS OWN SPEEDING TICKET," SAID COLIN CRAIG, THE FEDERATION'S SPOKESMAN. "THE PENALTY WAS IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THE GOVERNMENT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE WITH TAX DOLLARS. SO FOR THEM TO JUST BASICALLY CUT THE PENALTY IN HALF IS TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT."

FOR MOST CABINET MINISTERS, THE PAY CUT AT 40 PER CENT WOULD WORK OUT TO $14,698. THE 20-PER CENT MEANS THE PENALTY IS REDUCED TO $7,349.

FOR THE PREMIER, WHO EARNS MORE MONEY, THE PAY CUT WOULD NORMALLY BE $22,377 BUT IS CAPPED AT $11,188. MR. SELINGER'S TOTAL PAY, AFTER THE PENALTY, IS SLIGHTLY ABOVE $131,000. IT'S AMONG THE LOWEST OF CANADA'S PREMIERS, ACCORDING TO MANITOBA'S INDEPENDENT COMMISSIONER FOR LEGISLATURE MEMBERS PAY, ALLOWANCES, AND BENEFITS.

MR. SELINGER SAID THE DEFICITS ARE NEEDED TO COPE WITH THE GLOBAL RECESSION, AND POINTED OUT THAT ALMOST EVERY PROVINCE REMAINS IN THE RED.

"THE GLOBAL RECOVERY FROM THE RECESSION HAS BEEN SLOWER THAN ANTICIPATED...AND WE'RE MAKING ADJUSTMENTS ACCORDINGLY.

Ken280: You still have not told the readers of why you and Adrian Dix are not seeing eye to eye. Did he not pay for your coffee in your last sit down. We know he does not pay transit fares. Adrian Dix has said the election will be a nail biter and you say that B.C. will have a NDP government. Could you please explain to us why the two different answers.
  12. joes_2868 posted on 01/16/2013 03:30 PM
insite: Because of it , it boils back down to which political party you want to vote for. The future of B.C. is up for grabs on May 14, 2013, and it is up to the tax payers of B.C. who will be given the cheque book to the province.
Don't blame any of the political parties that win government. Blame yourselves for not doing your consumer affairs homework on your political parties. If you don't, then why do you it when it comes to your hip pocket?

TO ALL COALITION VOTERS: AN EXAMPLE OF A FUTURE NEWS HEADING IN THE VANCOUVER SUN IF IN FACT THE NDP DOES FORM GOVERNMENT ON MAY 14, 2013.

JUST REPLACE THE NAME SELINGER WITH DIX.

THIS IS FROM THE WINNIPEG SUN BY TOM BRODBECK, DEC 23, 2012.

IT READS: GREG SELINGER AND THE GOVERNMENT HE LEADS HAS A SERIOUS SPENDING PROBLEM. (JASON HALSTEAD/WINNIPEG SUN FILES)

THE SELINGER GOVERNMENT IS PROJECTING THE PROVINCE'S BOOKS WILL BE $602 MILLION IN THE HOLE IN 2012-13. THAT'S $98 MILLION HIGHER THAN THE NDP PROJECTED IN IT SPRING BUDGET, WHEN THEY FORECAST A $504 MILLION DEFICIT IN THEIR CORE GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS.

AND THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR IT. THERE WAS NO CATASTROPHIC FLOOD THIS YEAR. AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DIDN'T SLASH TRANSFER PAYMENTS.

TAX REVENUES ARE WAY UP, IN PART BECAUSE THE SELINGER GOVERNMENT BROUGHT IN THE HIGHEST OVERALL TAX INCREASE IN 25 YEARS IN 2012. IN FACT, INCOME AND CORPORATE TAX REVENUES ARE PROJECTED TO BE $73 MILLION HIGHER THAN FORECAST THIS YEAR. REVENUES DROPPED IN A FEW OTHER AREAS, ACCORDING TO THE GOVERNMENT'S SECOND-QUARTER REPORT RELEASED THURSDAY.

BUT STILL, OVERALL REVENUES ARE EXPECTED TO BE $64 MILLION HIGHER THAN ORIGINALLY PROJECTED.

DESPITE THAT, THE DEFICIT STILL WENT UP.

WHY? BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT HAS A SPENDING PROBLEM.

THE PROVINCE HAS ALREADY BLOWN ITS BUDGET IN FAMILY SERVICES BY $46 MILLION. APPARENTLY THE ORIGINAL APPROPRIATION OF $1.08 BILLION WASN'T ENOUGH FOR GOVERNMENT. THEY'RE NOW GOING TO SPEND $1.126 BILLION IN THAT DEPARTMENT. JUSTICE IS WAY OVER BUDGET BY $35 MILLION THIS YEAR, EVEN THOUGH THEY GOT AN EXTRA $10 MILLION IN 2012-13.

EVEN IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP IS OVER BUDGET BY $4 MILLION.

SO DESPITE ALL THE TALK BY PREMIER GREG SELINGER ABOUT TRYING TO SHOW SOME FISCAL RESTRAINT THIS YEAR TO "CLOSE THE GAP" BETWEEN REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES, THE GAP IS GROWING, NOT NARROWING.

REMEMBER WHEN SELINGER TOLD MANITOBANS EARLIER THIS YEAR AT HIS STATE OF THE PROVINCE SPEECH THAT HIS GOVERNMENT PLANNED TO NARROW THAT GAP? WELL, HE'S NOT DOING IT. HE'S NOT EVEN HOLDING THE GAP STEADY. IT'S GETTING WIDER.

AND THIS IS OCCURING DURING RELATIVELY GOOD ECONOMIC TIMES. MANITOBA'S ECONOMIC GROWTH THIS YEAR IS EXPECTED TO SURPASS THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? WHY CAN'T THESE GUYS GET THEIR FISCAL HOUSE IN ORDER?

BECAUSE THEY DON'T HOW TO, THAT'S WHY. DURING THE FIRST 10 YEARS OF GOVERNING, THE NDP DIDN'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH FISCAL CHALLENGES. THEY ENJOYED MORE A DECADE OF MASSIVE INCREASES IN TRANSFER PAYMENTS FROM OTTAWA AND THEY SPENT THAT MONEY LAVISHLY, DRIVING UP BASE SPENDING IN EVERY DEPARTMENT.

BUT NOW THAT TRANSFER PAYMENTS HAVE LEVELLED OFF A BIT--THEY'RE STILL VERY RICH THOUGH, AND AT HISTORICALLY HIGH LEVELS--THIS GOVERNMENT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

THEY WENT INTO DEFICIT WHEN THE ECONOMY SOFTENED A FEW YEARS AGO AND NOW THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET OUT OF IT.

THEIR LINE DEPARTMENT EXPENDITURES ARE NOW SO HIGH--IN PART BECAUSE THEY'VE ADDED HUNDREDS OF CIVIL SERVANT POSITIONS TO THE PAYROLL--THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

THE CONCEPT OF FISCAL AUSTERITY AND BUDGET MANAGEMENT IS FOREIGN TO THEM. PUBLICLY, THE SELINGER GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY WON'T CUT SPENDING BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO ERODE FRONT-LINE SERVICES IN IMPORTANT AREAS LIKE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION. BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO. THEY HAVE TO TACKLE THEIR GARGANTUAN BUREAUCRACY AND RE-EVALUATE THE HUNDREDS OF PROGRAMS THEY'VE ADDED TO THE TAXPAYER BILL OVER THE YEARS.

FOR EXAMPLE, DID THEY REALLY NEED TO CREATE A NEW GOVERNMENT AGENCY TO HELP ENTREPRENEURS SELL THEIR COMPANIES UPON RETIREMENT, WHICH SELINGER ANNOUNCED EARLIER THIS MONTH?

NO, THEY DIDN'T. BUT THAT'S THEIR MINDSET. TO KEEP GROWING THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT.

WITH THE GAP BETWEEN REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES STILL GROWING, I'M NOT HOLDING OUT MUCH HOPE THIS GOVERNMENT WILL MAKE MUCH--IF ANY--PROGRESS WHEN IT TABLES ITS 2013-14 BUDGET IN THE NEW YEAR.

AS IT IS, THEY'RE STILL HEADED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.

AND THAT'S VERY BAD NEWS FOR THE OVERALL FINANCIAL HEALTH OF THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT.

And to you NDP'er's that say this won't happen in B.C., well Tom Mulcair, held a NDP meeting on Parliament Hill on Tuesday with all the provinces top NDP officials, opposition NDP leaders, and the two NDP premiers, for a meeting showing a total unity of the NDP.

She does not have to be elected by the people. Check your facts. She is elected by the members of the liberal party. Those who support the Ndp are pathetic in that they are poor losers and from day one have never shown any respect for the winning liberals. Regardless of who wins respect should be shown for those giving up their time to serve the public.
