City of Vancouver staff will present a report to council within the next two months which will make recommendations for what do with the viaducts.

Councilor Geoff Meggs says while the idea of removing the old structures initially shocked some, attitudes are changing.

"Right now the viaducts are only east-west connections. The new proposal would provide a north-south link as well as an east-west one across the flats so that people would be able to come down terminal and make a lot of good connections. Our city engineers are saying this would meet our needs long term. There's no problem from that standpoint."

Meggs says under the proposed changes, drivers would have more options.

He adds the changes would reduce traffic congestion in surrounding neighborhoods.

Attitudes are changing ? Wishful thinking on Meggs part.

This is a project that doesn't need to be done and a project that will cost huge sums of money th( shouldn't be spent in the current fragile economic state.

No wonder some businesses in Vancouver are suffering. Vision Vancouver keeps pulling up the drawbridges, giving the impression they don't want visitors from outside the city. Add to that the outrageous parking rates, and you have a recipe for disaster. The plan might reduce traffic congestion in some neighbourhoods, but will add it to others.

Hope they are using hte same 'engineers' that built the PMKiller Bridge!
and the useless BC DISCRACE Place!
Maybe they are actually train engineers! choo choo!

YUP sounds like another great use of tax dollars (for future needs)
Tear down perfectly good roads and infrastructure and create jobs
    for family

@speakup The idea is to open up lands under the viaducts for housing and new business. This would create jobs as the work would be done by private developers not taxpayers.

It's already a done deal, don't forget this is Vision Vancouver. Forget about any real public input or discussion. The next step will be Vision slamming through approvals for the forest of sterile glass high rises that will replace the viaducts. Don't buy any hype that some of that land will become a park, Toronto's waterfront was once going to be a park too. Keep in mind that Vision has hired the head planner responsible for that particular architectural horror.
