The beer belly bandit is off the streets and facing charges.

The rotund robbery suspect gained the nickname after allegedly robbing up to eight grocery stores on the Lower Mainland.

Vancouver Police constable Brian montague says the suspect was arrested december 15th while trying to cross the border into the United States.

"Our investigators have charged him with one count of robbery at this point as well as some weapons-related offences."

68-year old Thomas John Schwartz remains in custody pending an extradition hearing in March.

He's also wanted on a warrant from 1972 for allegedly deserting the U.S. Air Force.

Its amazing how a story can be twisted to imply a different series of actions

Mr Schwartz took a taxi to the border , where he tried to cross without a passport - and was detained by American authorities

Sounds to me like he decided to turn himself in and face the charge of desertion in the US rather than face the risk of being arrested for armed robbery in Canada

Stupid man - he should know that our judges would take pity on him and sentence him to two weeks house arrest for his actions
