A woman who pleaded guilty to impaired driving in the crash that killed 22 year old Kassandra Kaulius in Surrey has been handed 37 months behind bars.

Natasha Warren was sentenced in Provincial Court in Surrey this morning.

The crown had been seeking a three and a half year term.

Defence called for 25 months behind bars.

She also gets an eight year driving ban.

Warren had a bottle and a half of wine the night she crashed into the victim's vehicle, and she also left the scene of the accident.

What is wrong with us all ?37 months ? out in 18 probably - she killed a 22 year old - Kassandra is gone from her friends and family forever ! Accidents happen but leaving the scene of the crime makes it even worse. We really need to make it a major crime and make hit and run something people just won't do anymore.

What's happening with the crash in Coquitlam that killed 2 women by Riverview (mom of 5) from a drunk driver and he took off. Why hasn't he gone to trial ? It's all very sickening and sad how there is minimal punishment and they don't take responsibility for their actions.

@BlahBlah maybe read the news more often....that's the case of charlene reaveley, lorraine cruz being killed by alleged hit/run drunk driver (who had previous convictions, one of them being NOT TO DRINK) CORY SATER....who has his famous defence lawyer Tony Serka defending him....this scumbag, however, pleaded NOT guilty....he ran right into those two women (and also seriously injured lorraine's boyfriend, paulo, causing his foot to be later amputated) and didn't even stop (later ditched his jeep cherokee)...CAUSE HE KNEW HAD HE BEEN STOPPED AND BREATHALZYED GIVEN HIS RECORD HE'D BE SCREWED MORE ROYALLY THAN HE IS NOW.

So she pled guilty and got a wrist slap of 36 months .

Maybe if she is truly remorseful she will start a poster campaign where her mugshot is featured prominently in every bar and liquor sales outlet - with some words to the effect "No amount of time will undo the terrible crime I have committed - please don't drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol".

Maybe if the court system came out and said " from now on , anyone who commits murder with their vehicle will serve a minimum of 10 years before being eligible for parole

Just maybe then some of the idiots who haven't got the message yet will think twice before they get behind the wheel of a car when they aren't capable of driving safely

Hey Blah, don't you know, the cost of a life of a person is only 37 months incarceration with 25% time off for "good" behavior?
The other concern might be this. . . a killing in 2011, this is now the end of 2012, and she admitted to the killing ? ??? It takes about a year + or -, even with a confession to incarcerate? And then let out after 376 months less 25% for good behavior ?????
There are a lot of problems with this case and so many others of similar ilke.
Politicians wake up !!!!! You are going to have to deal with this on a federal and a provincial level whatever your political stripe.

In my mind (as little as that may be), the penalty for impaired driving without causing injury or death should be a lot more severe. There is little difference between those who drive drunk and kill someone and those who drive drunk and are lucky enough to not kill someone. The criminal intent is the same whether the driver kills someone or makes it home without killing anyone. They just don't care.

Once the driver is caught they often admit they have screwed up however many of hem ask the police why they aren't out there catching real criminals. These people don't see what they are doing as criminal. This is why the IRP program has been so successful. The only thing many of these people understand is a hit to their pocket book or a harsh penalty.

I'm sorry but a $1000 fine and a 1 year driving prohibition is not sufficient. But then again, convictions are meant to rehabilitate the offender not to deter them from doing it again.
