UPDATES: ICBC busy with Port Mann "Ice-bomb" claims
METRO VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

12/19/2012

Some motorists taking the new Port Mann bridge today were hammered by big chunks of falling ice.

The ice fell from cables above the span.

RCMP were called in and shut down the bridge.

At least two people were hurt and a number of vehicles have been damaged.

ICBC says it's now processing at least 60 claims.

An engineer has been up on the bridge, checking it out to make sure it's safe.

This caller says it's an 'absolute nightmare:' "Large ice balls landing on our cars! I just had one put a big dent in my hood.  It's about a foot long, ice balls from the wires and it is like a nightmare.  It is freaky. I have a glass ceiling and it's like, scaring the hell out of me."

Other callers to the CKNW newsroom are reporting windshields have been cracked or entirely smashed.

    Can I PAY some more?

You would think the engineers would have foreseen something like that.

It seems the trolls under the bridge aren't liking the tolls paid and they want a little more gold

Do not worry. Safety is TReO's top priority.

Look for everyone to avoid this bridge during icy conditions.to avoid the deductable on windshield and comphrensive claims. Or will Treo pay fro the deductible?

But, not to worry in the long run. Climate change will eliminate the cold and icy conditios or will it?

No wonder Vancouver is laughed at around Canada. The news media and police are to blame for a lot of it.
How do you get large chunks of ice when the temperature didn't even get below freezing?
How do you get "gridlock:" on a freeway?
Why do so called "first responders" have to approach simple accidents from both directions then stop traffic in both directions?

In other cities, they clear the scene then sort it out.

Should we close every road with any overhead structure? I doubt the snow is gravitating only to the Port Mann.

Drivers in every city in Canada are bad in the snow - Toronto is THE worst.

I would put any 20 randomly picked drivers from above the highway on the North Shore against any 20 similarly picked drivers from anywhere in Canada. driving on dry snow on level roads is child's play.

@hha You need to understand that at 100 feet above the bridge the temperature WAS freezing with a lower wind-chill factor. My gosh, I cannot understand why you can't comprehend how large chunks of ice would form!

@hha @hha... The only one being laughed at is you! Unbelievable how stupid some people can be. Take a look at the damage done, its real!

Someone should have asked the designer of the Alex Fraser Bridge why two towers were designed into the structure. I guess that was to ensure the support cables do not cross the travelled portion. That way, ice will not fall on cars.

This has to be a major embarrasment to have to close a $3 billion dollar bridge because it wasn't built for our conditions. There is confusion between RCMP and TReO.

Another successful P3 project!!!! "The Bridge to Nowhere." The Port Mann hghway Improvement Project.

I have a dented hood as well. Will ICBC (the biggest profiting non-profit organization i can think of) pay for it? Will Treo? Or will I have to as a meek payer of taxes, of auto insurance, and of the only toll on the #1 all across Canada? I was stuck on that "wonderful" bridge for 1 hour AND I have to pay a toll AND pay for the repairs/deductible. I guess it was my fault though because I didn't roll the dice on the Patella bridge.

Well for all they spent they did not get the optional heated cables.

    Engineering fail! What the deal?
  9. KenN_6296 posted on 12/19/2012 02:37 PM
I suspect that the reason this is happening is because this bridge was not built with heated cables. It would have been common for a bridge in this climate and at this elevation to have heated susension cables to avoid icing. Looks like this was a major engineering woops, and an expensive one to fix now.
    1. commonsense posted on 12/19/2012 02:42 PM
@KenN_6296 What are the other solutions than heated cables? Coatings that reduce freezing? I'm guessing here.

This better be on the fault of the designers and engineers.
  10. grouchy1 posted on 12/19/2012 02:53 PM
WTF? I'm sure that the NDP will blame the Premier personally for this, and the Vancouver media who love nothing better than a bad news story will be smirking their way through the 6 o'clock news tonight. Let's get this fixed and make those that are responsible for the makes made in the design engineering process pay for it.
    1. Ken280 posted on 12/19/2012 06:04 PM
@grouchy1 We can blame Gordon Campbell and the Liberals, they all screamed this was going to be done before the deadline and the push was on and someone forgot the heat coils for the cables,so typical of their rush to nowhere! As for Christy Clark she' gone mining! Or maybe some shipbuilding overseas! Again.
  11. joes_2868 posted on 12/19/2012 02:54 PM
insite: When does the propaganda stop? Your quote, "Another Successful P3 project". Exactly what the NDP governments in Manitoba and Nova Scotia do. Premier's Greg Selinger of Manitoba and Darrell Dexter of Nova Scotia, says this is the only way to get the projects completed.
    1. HUGH F posted on 12/19/2012 03:46 PM
@joes_2868 And you constantly (and hypocritically) like to tar and feather other NDP governments.
    2. insite posted on 12/19/2012 04:47 PM
@joes_2868 But, it is a fact that something is wrong with the $3 billion Port Mann Bridge. Although it's a known fact that ice can build up and fall off any structure. But, to let it fall on vehicles? That the new 8-lane, soon to be the widest bridge in the world, open for just a few weeks, had to be shut down, because it wasn't designed for our climatic condirions? That's indefensible.

And, it has nothing to do with whatever happens elsewhere.

And, to forget the WD-40 applicator on the cables? That's not acceptable.

Imagine having to place signage that reads: Closed for the winter."

Or, "Use at your own risk, Watch for falling ice. Severe winter conditions ahead."

      Anyone with other suggestions?

Thinking more on it, why is there nothing about the Johnston hill, and the semis not able to get up it? The warning was yesterday and yet today there wasn't a plow in sight. Salt truck? I don't think so...would not keeping traffic flowing over a toll bridge a mail priority? I saw 3 out of 4 lanes blocked by semis that couldn't get up the hill...1!! person that was digging out 1!! truck. If the traffic hadn't have stopped on the bridge I don't think the falling ice balls would have been a huge problem as the vibrations of the moving traffic below might have kept it from building up. Thinking about it I didn't see any ice falling till I had been stopped for 15 minutes....

    Just my uneducated thoughts...

Has anyone ever looked at the record of the construction company?
Do you know they are being sued by the state of Califonia for poor engineer designs on 2 projects?
They have record of taking short cuts.
  14. AldinaI posted on 12/19/2012 03:25 PM
This is what we taxpayers pay millions--I mean billions--for?! A bridge design that allows ice to fall is beyond comprehension. What a disaster.

Then again, we paid half a billion dollars for a new stadium roof that doesn't fully open.

The Liberals sure know how to use taxpayer money wisely.

Oh Joey. Are you out of Valium. It's just terrible what people are saying. Come on. Just imagine. Do you think Kevi "HAIRBOY" Falcon could have known anything about a bridge he approved. Not really his fault. He didn't know anything about health care either. Just about the same result. I think it was "THE TOWN DRUNKS" fault and snoolkums. I know you and I don't know dip sh*t about bridge building but do you think that YOU would be so stupid to have the cable's slanting inwards over the traffic. It appears the kevie was. And don't forget that "THE TOWN DRUNK" said that we had to pay big money to attract the brightest and the best. So where does "HAIR BOY" fit in on this???????????? And just try to think of all this money that we, the little people (TAXPAYERS) have spent for a bridge that can only be used on sunny days in the winter. Thank god that we don't have winters like some parts of Canada.

@joes_2868 No Joey. I didn't Accuse you "THAT I DON"T NOTHING ABOUT CABLES" what ever the hell that means. I was saying that the company that built this greatest bridge in the world would have known that it gets cold here and there is a good chance that it will freeze four months out of the year. I wonder how many free dinners kevie got on my tax dime. And I have not seen snookums or polak yet on tv for a photo opp.

I find it shocking that with all the money spent and world-class engineers involved with the new Port Mann that no one thought to put a roof on it. These anomalies could have been avoided with a covered bridge as would the need for any snow removal. Moreover, if it had walls it could be air conditioned to provide comfort on those hot days too. A roof top garden would be another plus. Duh. Why don't these educated people know such things? Unbelievable.

@Ron_26 And then we can use the roof for rail as well. I like your thinking. Imagine the tolls!
  18. Squrl posted on 12/19/2012 03:52 PM
Please don't mind me for saying this but politics has nothing to do with this. The politicians made the bridge happen, yes. They Approved the design, Yes. But they know nothing about designing a bridge. Blaming them is like blaming me for having a dented hood. How could they have known?
We needed a new bridge. BADLY! I can't wait till all the rest of the #1 is complete as well (some of which BTW is rolled into the bridge cost).

So please stop blaming people for something that they couldn't have foreseen, even though it was the ...NDP...Liberals...Conservatives? I don't know....They all look the same to me...

By, you seem to be a little hot headed today. The hip pocket does take a kicking this time of year. Relax and take it easy. Mike Farnworth is the NDP'er that takes care of high blood pressure readings, and blown out gaskets.

@joes_2868 No no Joey. THE TOWN DRUNK that I'm talking about is the one that when he was mayor of a big city used to smash his blue honda (not sure why it wasn't a north american car) up and was repaired at the Manitoba Yards Body Shop. The bodymen there used to kill to repair it. They almost always found a full sealed bottle under the seats. The other one they just tossed out. I don't think you really want to go there with me because it seams like I know of what I talk. Unlike you.
