Vancouver police look to appoint unarmed peace officers

Vancouver police are setting up a $6.5-million pilot program for community safety.

It's based on a model from the UK.

If approved, 30 full-time and unarmed peace officers will be appointed – starting April 1.

The team's purpose is to respond to non-priority calls.

The board has also approved its 2013 budget, at $219 million.

Mayor Gregor Robertson says extra funding is needed to better fight overall crime.

"The overall goal here is to become the safest major city in Canada and we still have crime rates that are above what they should be. So I think we still have work to do at driving down crime across our city and we're not going to back off until we're achieving that goal."

This year's budget was $213 million.

As long as Vancouver has gangs and the drug capital of Canada I do not see how this will work - but then give it a try----

@BY I like your way of thinking, as this elected nut bar has to go.

Take your bike lanes as well and run Mr. Mayor.

So it appears that the Mayor of Gotham City does not wish to pay for the proper training of a police constable.

Sad as if the police chief wishes to go along with this it will be similar logic as applied to the 2011 Canucks playoffs.

Mayor Robinson you are applying farm mentality once again and will hopefully be replaced in the next civic election.

Man what a bone headed idea.

@RonE_1902 It is time really to try to find people who have common sense to run for mayor and council - if indeed that is possible

@AnneH. You are right. To thin. Probably from riding his bike (with out a helmet) (same as the other nutbar meggs) on the unused "BIKE LANES". But Clark Kent did some good. These clowns (and Penny Balem) are taking the city down. Must be nice to piss away the tax payers money.

@BY You are a sharp unit.

The Mayor of Vancouver currently is a useless "Nit".

@BY Oh look at you 2 calling names today and being childish.

Geesh, where is all the love? I kinda find the nic Moonbeam kind of endearing...

You can trash his trike lane push (btw - I hate riding a bike, but it keeps them off the sidewalk), but this is a long time in coming. We don't need Police tripping around with lethal force on their hip. Those without lethal weapons will create an atmosphere of equals, not one of stormtroopers.
Most importantly, police won't be culling the population of mental health cases or folks who had a bad day at the office/airport etc.

So - will these new Peace officers respond to calls on their trusty bicycles ?

Chief Chu must really have to grit his teeth to appear on the same stage as Mayor Moonbeam - especially after getting thrown under the bus by Moonbeam after the riot
