Jumbo Resort gets the green light
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)

Despite ongoing opposition from First Nations leaders and the New Democrats, the B.C. goverment has created a new resort municipality at the site of a controversial new ski development.

The master plan for the Jumbo Glacier resort was approved in March, following a 20-year review process.

The minister responsible, Bill Bennett, is defending the $450-million project, west of Invermere, saying it is vital to the region's economy.

He denies today's decision was rushed in anticipation of May's election.

How can you use the word rushed for something that had a 20 yr. review process? Whether you agree with the decision or not it was hardly rushed.

ken280: Two different topics here. $15 million is a separate item. Premier Ujjal Dosanjh of the NDP also ran government advertising based on how his government was doing, but again not mentioning party affiliation, just like the current ads.

@joes_2868 True the adds don't mention party affiliation, so that makes it ok? It was wrong when the NDP did it, and it is wrong now -15 million dollars but we are told we need to tighen our belts by the finance minister. Give me a break

What's the problem with creating a resort? This Province is built on tourism and if we can get people paying big bucks to fly up there why not??? Money, money, this world runs on money!!!
    1. JD_9814 posted on 11/20/2012 03:08 PM
@JasJ Nothing, but it demonstrates how a government will spend tax payers money at the eve of an election, in order to convince voters. It took almost 20 years, but a decision was possible at the eve of an election. Coincidence? Maybe!

I do not understand what is wrong with building the resort - it means jobs and money for a depressed region...

And it will help defer the effects of a pipeline that will never be built - unfortunately resort jobs do not pay what the construction jobs for the pipeline would have paid

Good luck keeping warm in the winter BC

Good-glad to read that it will proceed. The economic benefits will be important to people in that area. Oh yes, the urban dilletentes in Vancouver could give a rat's rear about the economy outside of metro Vancouver, but people there need work too.

The NDP is against every job creating project that comes along. The only economic ideas these fools have is to tax the so called rich (memo to DIx, rich people can leave BC) and to "retrain" everyone for jobs that will never exist.

We need economic growth, big time. We need this for many reasons, not the least of which is to fund the underfunded public sector pensions and to pay for health care for the baby boomers. Without it, the pensions and health services will not exist. Period-as in Spain, Portugal, Greece and the next member of the bankruptcy brigade, France.

@Jartann Well said. It goes way over the heads of socialists. They think money grows on trees and the Gov't. has an orchard. They could not explain economic growth.
The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Jartann Agree with some of your comment, but you better be carefull Jartann, you are extending your opinion beyond the story, Ron_28 will be sure to tag you on it.

AnneH: The pipeline that never will be built. More facts have to come to the attention of the public and it is not going the right way.
First of all, we have the NDP saying a complete NO to the pipeline. We have the Liberals leaving the decision open based on a 5 point plan that has to be reached.
We all know that construction would supply a very large number of good paying union jobs. Hotels, restaurants, machine shops, repair shops, parts suppliers, etc. close to the pipeline construction would see revenues like in the 60's and 70's, called boom days.
If this 5 point plan is approved, then the government has to take it further to the taxpayers and give them some options.
Option one would be that if B.C. does get a larger share of the royalities, the government could apply the royalities to health and education, lower the income taxes again, reduce the provincial sales tax, and eliminate the monthly B.C. medical premiums.
Option two would be that of how it is done in the state of Alaska in regards to the Alyeska pipeline that was built over 30 years. The state government gives all taxpayers a once a year tax free dividend cheque which has averaged $1108.45 per year. This same method could be applied in B.C.
B.C. taxpayers would have a choice of the two options.
Their choice would have to be in a province wide referendum vote. The questions would be a simple yes to one of the options, either option one or option two, but NOTH BOTH.
The second question would be a simple yes or no to the pipeline construction. All done in a nice simple referendum leaving the final decision up to the taxpayers of B.C. TAXPAYER DECISION FINAL. Do not comment saying why wasn't this done with the HST. Prince Edward Island goes to HST April 1, 2013, and taxpayers had no say, and it was also not announced in the election campaign. B.C. elimates HST and back to PST and GST on April 1, 2013. Nova Scotia NDP campaign promise was NO TAX INCREASES AND AFTER WINNING GOVERNMENT, RAISED HST FROM 13% TO 15%, THE HIGHEST HST IN CANADA.
SASKATCHEWAN SAYS THEY WILL NEVER HAVE HST. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TAX ON TAX. EXAMPLE, BUY A LAWN MOWER. PRICE OF LAWNMOWER HAS GST ADDED TO A SUB TOTAL AND THEN THE PST IS ADDED TO THIS TOTAL WHICH IS TAX ON TAX. ENOUGH ON HST AND NOW BACK TO TOPIC.
This way the taxpayers get the benefit of the proposed pipeline construction.
We all know the rallies that were held recently considered of happily retired people, unemployed people, and working people that still cannot afford the purchase of their first home. They are still renting.
All of these people constantly keep buying a lost cause which is LOTTO 649, and LOTTO MAX. These are not sure wins, but the pipeline is a win..
Yes it is true that accidents will happen, but you cannot have it both ways.
What happens if that long awaited earthquake that everyone says will happen one day. An oil spill is mere peanuts to what B.C. would like after a earthquake.
We all take chances everyday and accidents do happen. The plane goes down, car accident, going bankrupt in a business, forest fires, landslides, etc.
We all live once, not like the precious KEN280 who claims to have 9 lives and has presently high blood pressure readings because he does not agree with our comments and will most likely have a major stroke on May 14, 2013 after the election votes are counted. God wishes him a stroke from the neck down.
So as we all live once, why not live in B.C. with lower expenses or receive a yearly tax free cheque from the government.
Another item that really puzzles me too is why does the pipeline have to go to Kitimat, B.C. There is too much tight turns and twists in order to get out to the main ocean.
Why not Stewart, B.C. One straight arm of water right out to the open ocean. I have sent a reply asking EnBridge to see if they have they looked into this opition. Maybe they have, and maybe the terrain is more difficult, I don't know.
Taxpayers in B.C. better start thinking to the POSITIVE INSTEAD OF THE NEGATIVE.

Rember the movie, BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.

And to the taxpayers that are still NEGATIVE and won't give in, then why would the Yukon territory consider the pipeline, and now that the U.S. election is over and OBAMA has said yes to the pipeline from Alberta to Texas, why hasn't the taxpayers of Alberta making themselves look like B.C. complainers.
Don't reply that we have more lakes, streams, etc. These would be a mess after an earthquake.
It would be appreciated if anyone replies to this comment, please do so in logical way without negativity. It's been years since being a kid.

      @joes_2868 Joe:
Do you not think that Harper has already signed off on the pipeline deal with China. I think as far as Harper is concerned it is a done deal.
