B.C.’s water supply may be under more threat than we think, so the government needs to take action, says a new study released by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Analyst Ben Parfitt says the province has to tighten its reporting requirements for water use, and charge more for it.

"We’ve got a population that is continuing to grow, we've got increasing industrial demands for water, and we're starting to see the impacts of climate change. And all three of those things dictate, I think, that we pay closer attention to how we manage these resources."

The study calls for accurate, timely reports on water use by major consumers, appropriate pricing, the promotion of conservation, and better protection of watershed lands.

I find this to be so ironic. Pundits say we need 100 million people in Canada and I say what for. If we are using up the resources with some 35 million, how on earth will manage with more people?

I think the world is grossly over populated.....We had discussions in the 70's but it was not taken seriously....

@AnneH_4 If you read between the lines, this group is promoting higher taxes on water usage to hire more public employees to monitor it and higher pay higher wages to public union employees(their friends). They are running out of ways to figure out how to gouge the public for their own benefit!

@AnneH_4 AnneH if you really think that Canada is 'overpopulated' with 35 million people you really are very sheltered from the rest of the world. California alone has more people that all of Canada! There are plenty of resources out there. We just sometime have to work on distributing them better and that goes for the rest of the world too
