BCTF concerned over regulations allowing School Boards to set calendars

BC Teachers' Federation President Susan Lambert says she's worried about school districts in the province being able to set their own school calendars.

Lambert says it's difficult for families to organize family time if everyone is on a different calendar.  She says family time is something kids need in addition to school time.

"I don't think everything needs to be flowing from a market place calendar.  I think that the whole notion of children being part of families is something we should honour as well."

With regulations now in place, boards of education can set their own calendars starting with the 2013-2014 year.

Why is it that I don't believe a word she is saying ? Why is it that I think she is using the childrens welfare as a cover for her real arguement - which is all about the teachers ?

@ChrisM_18 Yes teachers are spoiled rotten babies, but it does not change the fact that is better for the children to all have the same time off.

Right Susan, you're concerned for the "families." No you're not, you're concerned that teachers won't get their 8 weeks of holidays in the summer! You're concerned because teachers are no longer in control of this any more. I'm sure your militant union will just threaten more strikes and more stamping of your feet if you don't get your own way...

@AndreaK_5056 I think the BCTF is concerned they will have to work through the whole year too. Susan will have to re-think her vacation plans.

Well, fancy that, Ms. Lambert is against this !!!

@WilliamS_3961 She would be against the sun setting in the west if she thought the idea came from the government !

Teachers only care about the hip pocket and glorious pensions. University students grads in teaching cannot get a job because there are still over 220 B.C. teacher federation teachers still teaching over the age of 65 because of the greed of the hip pocket. The hip pocket will not save them from a terminal disease. Teachers are a joke. In the good old days when I went to school and had to use the school library after school for homework research, I would sometime leave the school at 6:30 pm and there would still be teachers in the school. The other day, I was walking past my local high school in the pouring rain. Buckets of it. I had an umbrella of course. Students were playing football in the playground ready to catch pneumonia and yet our $75,000 plus teacher is standing under a canopy staying out of the rain and blowing his whistle. Why can't he be out in the field with them. Things better start changing immediately for the better. ONE BIG JOKE!

"Lambert says it's difficult for families to organize family time if everyone is on a different calendar."

Since no other profession includes a 9 week summer break, and today's reality is that both parents are working, everyone already IS on a different calendar. This change makes sense to me, and actually is more in keeping with international standards.

@rclr That just goes to show how far the BCTF is from the real world the rest of live in, shift work, 2 weeks vacation ONCE a year, work the rest of the 50weeks, maybe have to work on the Stat. holidays. No wonder tax payers, ie. people who pay there wages can't relate to there demands. The BCTF needs a complete overhaul!!

I support teachers, but this position makes no sense. There is absolutely nothing wrong about districts scheduling their own school calender.

@Garp Since when did BCTF's position on anythign make sense? They are a joke.
Support teachers? Only if they get serious and shape up their own organization.

Yes, because spending 9 weeks straight with your family is SO much better than periods. You appreciate time off, family, education and your job better when you are not doing it all at once.

Susan Lambert, you have an underlying issue you are not sharing.

Susan Lambert and BCTF have zero credibility, who cares what they say in their comments? We all know they have no interest except more more more for themselves. Kids and families are not even on their priority list.

    "Concerned"? I don't think so.
