Premier Christy Clark calls the massive payouts toICBC executives 'ridiculous.'

The corporation has reduced its executive and announced it plans to chop an additional 250 positions, which would save them 29 million dollars a year.

but through 2013 severance could cost ICBC up to 26 million dollars in a one year expense.

Clark says the payments are 'silly', but the corporation is bound by the contracts.

"It's very expensive to restructure, but we're going to save more every year as a result of the restructuring, so it's an expensive one-time cost and every year, we are going to be saving rate-payers more than this one-time cost."

Seven executives who were cut last week cut could end up getting almost two million dollars in severance.

These "payoffs" are always said to be "silly" and "ridiculous" by the Talking Head of the day but, notice they are always "protected" by contracts time and time again. Not possible to change those contracts? Just askin.........

@WilliamS_3961 A contract is exactly that...you cant simply change it to suit your needs at the time.

What a braindead hack- if she really wanted to show her mettle she would tell ICBC to make each of these people work out their term or take nothing - that's what happens in private industry !

@ChrisM_18 No it's not. Most companies that layoff or let go a manager and executive normally walk them out the door right away. And I don't know any one at the level that has been let go that hasn't contacted a labour lawyer to make sure they aren't getting the maximum severence.

@ChrisM_18 Yeah...lets have them work out their contract and pay them full salary for that whole time. Did ya miss the part where ICBC will save more than this each and every year? ever heard the expression rip the band aid?

So when new people are hired, change the terms of the contract to something realistic In THE EYES OF THE TAXPAYING PUBLIC!!! WE are fed up with this nonsense!!! It is time ALL politicians put the public good ahead of their own GREED!!!

absolutely right, payng out these contracts is ridiculus, what are you going to do about it? this is no different than your party paying the legal fees of Basi/virk after they pled guilty there was no contract there yet you paid over 6 mil to shut these guys up.

Talk, and criticism is very cheap, especially this close to an election. Put your money where your mouth is and protect the taxpayer from this kind of 'ridiculous' severence. It would be 'silly' to do absolutely nothing about it.

simple solution to the public outrage ...make all auto insurance private instead of the government monoply for basic. Don't expect that to happen, the government wants the $250-$300 mill a year it takes from ICBC, also known as a hidden tax on ratepayers. Put that money back into the ins company hands and the rates go down, and the severances they pay should not be of concern to anyone.

Privatize auto insurance now and I might believe you Christy!

If Christy Clark is so concerned about these massive payouts, why doesn't she announce a change in future severance payout policies that won't cost the taxpayers an arm and a leg ?? Oh,well by next year we'll all be saying Christy who??

@JimO_9 Look at the autonomy agreements. Where can the government step in and say this is as much as you can pay etc.

They should, especially since they do that with universities.
