A key labour leader in BC is pleased the federal government is reviewing a controversial program aimed at hiring foreigners to fill local jobs.

"We're slowly peeling the layers back on this and we're going to get there."

Steve Hunt is the Western Canada director of the  United Steelworkers Union, which has been critical of plans to hire Chinese miners to work at a new coal mine in tumbler ridge.

"We're guardedly optimistic I guess you'd say, but it's coming right from the Prime Minister's office, so in the federal government circles, that's pretty big stuff."

The federal government is investigating allegations H-D Mining refused to hire anyone who couldn't speak mandarin.

The employer refused to hire anyone that couldn't speak Mandarin. If those Chinese workers are "specialists", that can just walk in and perform the work without training, they should be paid more than the going rate, not less than (without benefits). It's obvious that the employer just wants to skirt the system, for personal gain at the expense of Canadian workers and taxpayers. The FIPA trade "deal" takes away any faith I have that the Conservative government is acting in our best interest. We will see many, many, many more stories like this in the future 31 years if this agreement goes ahead.

Are the chinese workers already here ? I see various comments from HD mining that make it sound as if the work is underway ?
