Provincial Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says she's interested by a new report which found raising minimum prices for harder alcoholic drinks could help offset healthcare costs for alcohol-related illnesses.

"Certainly we know that direct and indirect costs of alcohol abuse and alcoholism are tremendous in our healthcare system, so anytime someone comes forward with a new idea, I’m interested in it. And I’ll certainly be having a look at the study."

MacDiarmid, a doctor herself, says she need to read the study in more detail.

Add to that tobacco products and cigarettes....as far as I'm
Concerned smoking is even worse than drinking. Why punish the odd glass of
Wine? I don't see any warning labels on alcohol like we do on cigarette
Packages.....triple and double tax the cost of cigarettes it's disgusting
And a huge burden on health care

Sure, why not we are already have the highest gas taxes in NA and
we see how well that is workng, you really want to help? dont punish those of us that like to buy a bottle of spirirs every now and then to share with family and friends. Help the chronic abusers with medical assistance like you would any other addict. Raising prices will not stop people that need the prodcut from getting it they will just steal, again, like any other addict. You guys are addicted to taking money from taxpayers with no plan in place other than to raise taxes.

Break out the still start making your own wine and beer.
That is the way the Russian handled it when thier government raised booze prces. In Norway has the highest booze prices in the world and one of the most sold items in the store is brandy/scotch/rum flavoring. Remember cigarette smuggling.
All that will happen its that other sources of cheap high will be found.
Gasoline, paint thinner etc. This is what happened in the arctic when there was no booze allowed.

An easy tax grab and it'll take more money away
from families living on lower income levels.

Adding a few cents will NOT deter those who have
problems with alcohol abuse. They first priority
will be to buy the alchol, if it means the kids will
    starve.

McDermott needs to give her head a shake.

What had the B.C Government done to deter drug
    use amongst our young people?

What has the government done to help those with
drug addictions inc. other drugs other than alcohol?

Why did the Provicne close the Addictions Centre
    in Chilliwack?

So, now, they think adding a few extra cents will stop
    the problem taxing our system?

With drug abuse comes domestic violence, assaults
with bodily injury, mental health problems, child
    abuse and on and on................

The government needs to give their attention
to preventing illegal hard drugs into our Province and
begin providing detox resources but foremost proper
support for families and children to help deter them
from getting into drugs, in the first place.

Education at an early age is key and prvoiding supports
for dysfunctional families trying to deal with negative
affects of Drug Use, inc, alcohol and cigarettes.

The amount of tax and fees collected by various levels of government and their agencies in BC is enormous. Really it is about time they paused and re-evaluated financial waste, effect better financial and project planning, and abolish the over lapping duplications. We have Adrian Dix firming in the bag indicating tax increases.

We can only afford only so much tax abuse by these governments. Liquor prices are already too high.

These dysfunctional Liberals are going off the deep end again, they do not have one stable minister, thanks to Christy Clark who is half baked at the best of times.
    1. ChrisM_18 posted on 10/20/2012 10:27 AM
@KenL_6250 don't you think Dix and his band of Left coast loonies will be just as quick to jack up the tax on Booze ? Of course they will - and then they will congratulate themselves for looking after the welfare of the province
We need someone who is going to stand up and say less government - less taxes is the way to go
We need less social hand holding and a bit more attitude of tough love

How many people are sick and tired of the nanny state!! Alcohol is a legal substance. I agree with one comment - perhaps people should just make their own

The problem with this of course is that they may make a mistake and make moonshine that can blind a person after aa few sips

Governments just want money - they are too lazy to go through each department to find savings and I bet everyone on this page would be able to do just that

The real addicts here are all levels of Government. They are addicted to our money and they, as all addicts will do, will do and say anything to get more of it.

Liberals like their counterparts in Ottawa study things to death but never use any common sense and get things going, always protecting their butts.
  10. HedgeH posted on 10/20/2012 01:12 PM
And they are wondering why alcoholics are drinking listerine and cooking wine on the downtown east side. And which ones actually need the health care system because of it. Such an idiot Government!!
  11. lican posted on 10/20/2012 01:59 PM
So on one hand we will raise prices on alcohol because we want to stop people from using it and thus be safer but on the other hand we will open a "safe" injection site so people can use horrible drugs "safely".......what we actually need is a "safe" drinking site!

Wow, another price increase and it might be slightly cheaper or at least break even going down to the US, spend a 24hrs and bring back a couple bottles of tequila.

Lets see, if a future bottle of tequila is priced $65 in BC and $20 in WA state:
$67.00 - Night at the Tulip Inn, Mount Vernon WA
$15.00 - Half a tank of regular gas in WA
$04.50 - McDonalds Quarter lb Value Meal
    $03.50 - Egg McMuffin Meal
    $40.00 - Two tequila bottles
    --------------
    $130.00 TOTAL

Now, if I share the trip costs with another value minded friend it's a no brainer. So go ahead, tax it all you want, I can't still legally purchase it somewhere else.

Currently in California. Bought a 1.75 litre bottle of Stoli this afternoon for $17.99. That would be what $65 or $70 in BC ?

The real story here is about health care costs, not booze or tax. This is the shape of things to come. When Canadians accepted the premise that 100% government delivery of health care is the only acceptable model, we allowed our bodies to be nationalized. Now, governments control when or if any of us gets any health care. And now, the system that was sold on the basis of compassion and treating everyone equally will morph into one where what you eat, drink, etc will become conditions on whether the system will treat you. So,they will tax booze, french fries, pop, just about everything deemed to be "unhealthy" all for the purpose of funding health care. Then it will be nanny state restrictions on food. Then it will just letting people die for lack of care.

The great NHS in the UK ("the envy of the world") has gone down some of these directions already. With an aging population and with governments having made promises they can never keep, all they can do is increase taxes and restrict access.

The only solution on the health care front is to allow for private options under government regulation. This is how other countries handle it, with better outcomes, shorter waiting lists, and lower admin costs. I wont hold my breath waiting for this to happen in Canada. Too many people are just wilfully blind. This is a stupid tax idea, but it is on the table because a wasteful, ineffective, inefficient health care system exists here. No need for it, because there is plenty of evidence of viable altenatives.
    1. Garp posted on 10/21/2012 07:57 PM
@Jartann the idea that 100% of all health care must be funded by the government is unrealistic. This model needs to be revisited in light of demographic realities. What's wrong with a two tier system? Private concurrent with public health care?

Taxes on liquor goes up April 1, 2013. The taxpayers voted to get rid of the hst to bring back the old tax system. Current hst is 12%. April l, we will have 5% gst and 10% B.C. liquor tax for a total tax of 15%. Go to a liquor store or pub today and the tax is 12%. Go to a liquor store or pub on April 1, 2013, the tax will be 15% as it was before the hst, but pub food will only be taxed with the gst.

This is the exact same thing as forcing people to wear bike and motorcycle helmets. People whine and complain about having to pay for peoples medical bills if they choose not to wear a helmet. But those same people now do not want the taxes on booze to go up. See, this is what happens when you start letting socialism dictate public policy and control our lives. Either you let people have a choice, or you control their lives completely.

@Specimen Yarp you are right, but somewhere there is a balance - we just need to find it.

Increasing the tax on alcohol is not going to change my behaviour. No, I am not going to drink less. If the tax lowers, I am not going to drink more. It's simple. Alcohol is a luxury. Smoking is a luxury (ha!). You want to consume them, then go ahead. Stop whining about an increase of tax on alcohol. If you cannot live without alcohol, cannot have fun without alcohol or cannot enjoy a meal with alcohol, then you have a problem.

Canada never had prohibition so we didn't have moonshiners like they did and still do in the states. We've made BCBud more important economically than forestry here, maybe it's time to get those copper stills whistling.
