A Water Quality Advisory has been issued for some residents of Chilliwack after samples tested positive for the e-coli bacteria.

The affected area is Greendale.

The city's standby chlorination system has been activated, but it will take approximately 12 hours for for the disinfectant to reach the area.

Residents are advised to run water  to flush the chlorine through pipes.

At this point, city staff say no Boil Advisory is necessary.

Until we know where Greendale gets its water, we should not be quick to associate the Greendale e-coli with the Chilliwack controversy. If Greendale and Chilliwack obtain their water from diffeent sources and through a different distribution system, the Greendale story has no relevance to Chilliwack.

But, in my opinion, neither does Walkerton, ON.

Now that is truly scary - the obvious manipulation of the timing of this advisory. Really brings into question the tactics of the Health Authority !! Good thing we live in a democrcy isn't it ??

It would seem appropriate that the Precautionary Principle apply to public water supply and distribution systems when public health concerns arsie-in this case, e-coli.

This may be important in the Chilliwack area which is apparently growing very rapidly-thus increasing the potential for a serious e-coli crisis -should an outbreak occur within the water system.

The ecoli outbreak in the Walkerton water system affected many and 6 people died. Subsequent investigation led to criminal charges against those who were reponsible for safeguarding the water supply. There are lessons to be learned by every city, town, village or municipality which supplies water to its citizens.

Democratic rights and freedoms are important when the choice is to build or not build a new arena in a hay field, But, in my opinion, chlorination introduced due to public health concerns trumps the democratic right to drink unchlorinated water. Bottled water is always an option for those opposed.

Those elected to serve the community of Chilliwack should seriously consider their responsibilities for ensuring public health even if the potential for an e-coli outbreak appears remote. One e-coli death is one too many. If Chilliwack does not respond appropriately, the province must step in.
