Police board officially endorses regional policing

Vancouver's police board has quickly approved recommendations stemming from B.C.’s Missing Women Inquiry, but any hope of a regional police force becoming a reality still rests with the provincial government.

Several mayors, including Vancouver's Gregor Robertson, have urged the Clark government to set up regional forces for both the Lower Mainland and metro Victoria areas.

“Regional policing is the standard model with bigger cities for obvious reasons. It's more efficient and affordable and improves public safety, but that decision is not made by local mayors. It's made by the B.C. government. So far, they're not demonstrating a willingness to go there."

The premier and NDP leader Adrian Dix have refused to say if regional policing will be on the agenda after May’s election, but Robertson says he just wants them to agree to discuss it.

Another key recommendation made – and now endorsed by the VPD board – is to no longer keep mayors as chairs of police boards.

Robertson says there's a clear conflict of interest when funding for police services is reviewed.

"The chair role for a mayor who's eventually voting on the overall city budget is a challenging approach."

He says he still supports mayors being board members, but with no voting power.

And who do you expect to pay for this service? We just signed a 20 year deal with the RCMPand have a provincial government that can't balance a budget putting less than half of what they allowed for healthcare in the previous budget and now you want a regional police force plus more from the tax payer for that Black endless pit of money called Skytrain....you people are crazy....I wonder at times where your common sense is? Robertson you are so far out of touch with reality and helping the useless tits of society instead of concentrating on us who actually proved a society...

@taxed to death The RCMP contract can be reviewed in 2 yrs and we can opt out,so I presume that money could pay for this new force then you could also see the skytrain police, phased out! Again the Liberal/cons solution to the disadvantaged it's elimination! As for your statement of entitlement, proves just who are really out of touch! ( helping the useless tits of society)who made you judge and jury.Go NDP Go

@taxed to death Did yoyu actually read the article before going off on your rant? One of the advantages of a regional force will be a SAVING of money.

no surprise that VPD has quickly approved this, its a city totally out of control. then other communities can suffer even more as all the resources get sucked into Vancouver to deal with their mess.

It may be most cost effective and efficient to create a Greater Vancouver Regional RCMP detachment. The infrastructure is already in place in the majority of cities. As well, there would be no need to hire en-mass to ensure that the manpower standards are met with a unionized police force.

I support this action as long as they do not hire any assholes, which seems to the case these days!

The good old progressive, Mayor Moonbeam, has struck again. He's pushing for a regional police force again; this time with the support of the Vancouver Police Board. Let's see Mayor of Vancouver, Vancouver Police Board - I wonder if there's a connection there.

Yes, all you stupid, ill-informed, rednecks in Delta or other communities don't want a regional police force. You clearly don't really appreciate good ideas. You say you are happy with the force you have and don't want it changed. You say you like to have local control of the police in your area. You say you like the sense of community in your part of the world. You say you don't want your tax dollars lumped in with spendthrifts in other communities. Well the 'good mayor' wants to change all of that.

Mayor Moonbeam can't seem to get this ill-conceived idea done at the local level. So he does what all despots do; he tries to have his will imposed on you. This time he wants the more senior BC Government to impose his system on the unbelievers. Your opinions or wishes simply aren't to be considered when it comes to socialist - 'er excuse me - progressive ideas; unless of course you agree with socialist.

May I suggest that all the supporters of Mayor Moonbeam leave the city and visit one of the surrounding communities? Please don't stay; just come for a visit. Besides, you wouldn't like it ‘out there’; too many rednecks and gun owners; too many of those evil Bible believers; too many believers in small government. But a few hours of breathing cleaner air might help overcome the effects of the toxic fumes you are all breathing in the "big city". Clearly your air seems to be impairing your mental capabilities.

The provincial political support for a regional or provincial police force will never happen, be it NDP or Liberal, because the current system of policing is totally dysfunctional and I'm beginning to think that for their own personal reasons, our politicians like dysfunctional police forces......Because a proper functioning police force might just thoroughly investigate MLA spending and other back room deals.....Case in point; BC RAIL!!!!!! Just saying..........

Ah get the mounties to police the Fraser Valley. Great place for them and will fit into their work rotations if they are on a prison work release program from a conviction.
