Pat Bell on why he's leaving politics

Outgoing B-C Jobs Minister Pat Bell says he feels just fine, but a heart aneurysm is spelling the end of his political career.

Bell says the aneurysm was detected last fall, and he may eventually need surgery...he says it appears to be genetic rather than stress-related.

He says, "stress isn't kind of a factor in terms of the artery or the technical term of it would not be, so I don't know what it is, I know I'm 55 years old, I know I have a brand new grandson, I'd like to be around to see him grow up a little bit, and I think stepping back at this time is the right thing to do."

Bell will not be running for re-election, but will remain as Jobs Minister until the vote....he says he told Premier Christy Clark about his condition in December, and she asked him to reconsider his decision to quit.

bctaxpayer: How so? 49% plus of the popular vote needed for NDP to win government.
Adrian Dix is going to have to explain the blunders that are happening in NDP Manitoba and NDP Nova Scotia.
He and his team will be hearing this question at every all candidates meeting during the election campaign.

NDP MANITOBA AND NDP NOVA SCOTIA EQUALS NDP ADRIAN DIX

@joes_2868 As Bill Good said to you what does, other provinces have to do with BC! Stay with the times and the dates! you know it is 2013 or do you? Another Fudget Budget coming from the Liberals/Cons of the coalition and that is not in the past, it is now and tomorrow! Go NDP Go

And it all comes together making sense now. Minister Bell knows all about minimum wage employment and perhaps about temporary foreign workers with Wendys being so close to Tim Hortons with so man side by side outlets. Makes sense that a minimum wage employer would do so much for opening up more minimum wage jobs in BC and think nothing of it. Minimum wage jobs are all he knows. Kind of a let down though that the entire #BCJOBSPLAN and #WORKBC will be rudderless till after may. Well come to think of it it has been all along. all the best Pat and stay away from the Wendys Chilly. But you already knew that.

    Somehow, my posts are disappearing.

While health concerns may have prompted Mr. Bell’s decision to leave politics in May, that may not be the entire story.

Mr. Bell must be terribly disappointed in the performance of the Jobs Plan. After taking credit for 40-50,000 jobs that were reported by the LFS in the month before the Jobs Plan was even announced, it has gone downhill ever since.

The HD Mining-Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the delusional throne speech which promised thousands of jobs and a $100 billion dollar Prosperity Fund were probably the last straws.

Mr. Bell probably is probably aware that Alberta stopped contributing resource revenue into the Alberta Heritage fund in 1987-only 10 years after inception. Aside from a $4 billion infusion of resource revenue in 1986-88, the total resource contribution to the fund has only totalled $16 billion over 30 years (where it stands today). Meanwhile, except for an inflation allowance, the Alberta government has drawn from the fund’s investment income an amount totalling nearly $36 billion into general revenue.

So, it is unfathomable that British Columbia can create a $100 billion fund over 30 years and yet pay off a growing debt that already stands at $56 billion. Additionally, taxpayers have an obligation to pay off nearly $100 billion in PPP contracts and IPP purchases. While these obligations are not debt in the true sense, the $100 billion is still payable by taxpayers in the form of user fees, tolls and rates. This huge obligation is an opportunity cost which means that money cannot be spent on anything else.

So, Mr. Bell may well have seen the light....perhaps....

It is noteworthy that Mr. Bell’s health concerns do not prevent him from engaging in partisan comments (audio vault-CKNW-this morning). So posters need not hesitate as long as their comments are reasonably respectful.

I wish Mr. Bell well-going forward. I met Mr. Bell at the Parliament Buildings last year and thanked him for his support in an unrelated matter.
