Minister says relocating Liquor Distribution Warehouse doesn't have to do with money

“It’s not entirely about the money,” says the minister responsible as the province looks at relocating the Liquor Distribution Warehouse in Vancouver.

Rich Coleman says the current building is not tall enough and the operation could become more efficient in a new updated facility.

But Coleman also admits the real estate it is sitting on is worth a few bucks and the Province might look at selling it after the move.

Asked if they have a new location locked down Coleman said:

"No we will ask the real estate market to give us some options as to what is out there we are hoping to find something that is already purpose built rather than having to wait but we don't know what the market is yet. We wanted to make a decision on the move first and then now we will go to the market and have them make a proposal to us."

The BC Government and Employees Union says the Province just wants to sell the land and use the dollars to balance the government books.

Hmmm .... Let's make sure that all the Commercial Real Estate agents know that the decision is already made and that the government is looking to spend a bunch of money... That's a good negotiating strategy !
That's like me let my real estate agent upsell me on a new house then pressure me to take a low offer on the house I own - the end result is predictable !
Only unlike Coleman I feel the pain for getting deeper in debt and I don't get a kickback for my efforts !

Coleman is loyal to the party and its leader. But he doesn't lie as enthusiastically as the rest of them. Maybe he still has some moral fiber buried deep inside somewhere.

@SlimP_9860 Loyal to the party...............look at his manipulation
of the Liberal voting process in referene to Moe Gill
of Abbotsford.......they'll even shaft their own to get on
      top of the dog pile.

      So sad, so bad.

I just find it odd that so many people seem surprised that this is going to happen. Are you all public service union members? If you re-call the debate over selling the distribution to the private sector, everyone knew that the facility that they use now is outdated and inefficient.Private or public, the current facilty has outlived it's effective life span.
I'm wary as to why the union is jumping on this right now.At the same time as they are running ads on radio accusing people of something nefarious if they don't buy their beer and wine from a government, union run store.I smell a confict of interest. It seems that the union thinks that any profits from the sale of booze belongs to their members. Not the tax paying public.

DougB_25: You are right! We have both government liquor stores and private liquor stores in B.C.
Every NDP'er in the province and every NDP MLA in the province has shopped at a private liquor store.
IT IS TIME ONCE AND FOR ALL THAT NDP'ER'S START PRACTIISING WHAT THEY PREACH.
Right now they do the same as the Pope. He talks about birth control but never practice it.

@joes_2868 I always buy at the BC government store all the profits go to the Government not some middleman who's a friend of the Liberals and pad his pockets and one man owns 3 outlets and naturally donates to the Liberal/Cons of the coalition party! Anti-union creeps are like scabs on a cut! They will complain about any worker in BC making a living wage and support foreign workers taking over the work force, on the cheap! Protect BC workers vote NDP.Go NDP Go

Any decision affecting the LD Warehouse or the LDB for that matter should be held off until after the election.

Any announcements or decisions will be viewed by many as something designed to benefit his friends. There have been too any things going on within the liquor business. No matter how sound the decision to relocate the LD Warehouse, it is already tainted.

If Mr Coleman is so confident of his government's chances of being re-elected, then he should wait until the election is over. This issue is not going to decide the outcome of the election. So why not wait? Then, the government, regardless of stripe, can have a thorough look at the merits of relocating the facilities.

It is a matter of trust and confidence. Do voters believe the best interests of the taxpayers will be represented by making a decision now? I think not.

That said, there may be merit in considering relocation of the LD Warehouse. Everyone is in favour of greater efficiency. But, is this the tight time and is Mr. Coleman the right person ( at any time)?

Last sentence typo-should read: Is this the "right" time...
    1. miltw posted on 02/16/2013 06:21 PM
@insite Actually both work these times are indeed tight.

But as for Boss Coleman first thing to be suspicious of is which close friends was he talking about when he said " it's not entirely about the money" makes ya think maybe favors that need repaying before he and his party are turfed?
  10. WizardOron posted on 02/16/2013 07:48 PM
Although, I understand and appreciate what Rich Coleman is saying I still look at this with a huge grain of salt. Maybe they need to move and maybe not. Perhaps, this is going to turn into some sort of pay-off to someone we know is tied to the Liberals that was the front-runner in the failed deal to privatize the distribution center. Did this group not have the space, land and warehouse to do this or at least plans in place to build one.

And joes_2868 get off your anti and disrespectful NDP rant. The Liberals are a failed government and are doing everything they can to stay in power just as the previous Social Credit and NDP tried to do in the dying days of their governments.

Coleman is bullshitting again as usual. I did some contracting work at that place a few years ago. From floor to ceiling is about 30ft. The place is huge with tons of room. This is just another Liberal scam trying to balance the books. I can't wait for these crooks to just disappear for good. Good riddance.
  12. joes_2868 posted on 02/16/2013 08:56 PM
Bilf_8: How so? The NDP need 49% plus of the popular vote to win government.
Also Adrian Dix will have to explain the blunders being made by Manitoba NDP Premier Greg Selinger and by Nova Scotia NDP Premier Darrell Dexter.
NDP is NDP no matter what province.

I am going to contact all media and also the Chamber of Commerce offices in B.C. as they will hosting most of the all candidates meetings in the province. Have to make sure some of the questions asked to Adrian will be in regards to NDP blunders by Selinger and Dexter.

It will be Adrian's job to layout his platform which he has yet to do and explain the NDP blunders being made big time in Manitoba and Nova Scotia costing taxpayers mega dollars which there is no need for.

    JUST PLAIN OLD CORRUPTION!

WizardOron: And who bought you off. If the Liberals have to go, the NDP is not the answer.
Why don't you be man enough to say that the best solution to B.C. politics is to put both the Liberals and NDP in opposition.
Example: You buy a brand new Ford, and this Ford is nothing but trouble from warranty right through to draining your hip pocket.
Can you honestly tell the readers, that you would buy a Ford again when it is time to re-invest in a new vehicle?

From 1952 to 2013, 61 years of government. 13 years of NDP government and 48 years of coalition governments.

Voting to put in a NDP government again. Severe brain damage my friend.

The readers were not born yesterday. THINK! DON'T BLOW GASKETS AND SHOOT FROM THE HIP LIKE MIKE FARNWORTH, KEN280, THE READERS CONSULSTANT, A MAN WITH A BRIEFCASE 50 MILES AWAY FROM HOME, AND BC TAXPAYER.

@joes_2868 And who made you an expert.

Your disrespectful and should take some of your own advice.

You are not an expert but make yourself out to be one.

I'll vote any way I like as this is a democracy. I like most people in this province and this country like living in a democracy where we can vote in different governments if we wish too.

If the province votes in an NDP government so be it. This is a democracy.

Social Credit, Liberals, NDP or Conservative or any other government by any other name make mistakes, even the ones you love and support.

We do not all have to be like you or like the same governments as you.

You need to THINK!!! There is no need to be rude and disrespectful. I think you need to be more polite on here. Just because you can be anonymous does not give you the right to insult people.

I'll VOTE NDP if I like. I'll VOTE LIBERAL if I like, GREEN, maybe CONSERVATIVE. . .it's my right to vote for who I want and so do you.

    You are the retarted one!
You come on this news line and make comments, yet in your own life style, you do the exact opposite.
    Typical NDP'er!
"Go NDP Go". How so? NDP need 49% plus of the popular vote needed to form government.
You can explain to the readers at around 8:45 pm on May 14, 2013, why your "Go NDP Go" is a phrase from the twilight zone.
Adrian and his team of candidates will have questions at the all candidates public meetings to explain for blunders being made by NDP Premier Greg Selinger and by NDP Darrell Dexter in Nova Scotia.

What kind of NDP premier is Darrell Dexter, who needs to call an election but is scared to and is thinking to delay the call until his 5 year mandate is up.
  17. joes_2868 posted on 02/17/2013 04:31 PM
Ken280: Ken, you always purchase at government owned liquor stores. That is good as it keeps the money in the taxpayer bank account. If so, then why don't all of your NDP supporters do the same?

I get the feeling that as group, you cannot come to an agreement.

    Very sad.

    just an idea Mr Coleman
Why not sell (give away) the old site to a Liberal supporting developer who in return funds the Liberal party.
Then buy (pay far more than market value) land for the new site from another Liberal supporter somewhere else, again who in return funds the liberal party.

    something to ponder..... yes?
