Family Day not such a great deal for small businesses

Monday marks BC’s first annual Family Day, and as some big chain businesses are taking advantage of the holiday, small businesses are taking a hit.

Tourism Whistler is enthusiastic over the new statutory holiday.

Jay Maynard, Travel Consultant for Tourism Whistler, says he personally started booking for the long weekend as far back as October 2012.

"We've generally had a huge success, pretty much booked up over the last three weeks."

But Mike Klassen with Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses says small businesses are not as enthusiastic.

" It's the Government that gets the glory, but small business operators paying the bill. There are costs as high as over eleven hundred dollars for a small business of five employees or less."

Those costs come from paying holiday pay at one and a half time normal wages, and giving employees another paid day off.

Klassen is encouraging people to consider shopping at local small businesses to help make up for the losses.

Meanwhile Charles Gauthier, Executive Director for the Downtown Business Improvement Association says for most small businesses this first BC Family Day will be a trial.

"I think it's going to be sort of an interesting situation to watch. I think what we're going to see is a bit of a mixed bag for the first family day. I think a lot of businesses will then make decision in the future whether or not to stay open."

Gauthier adds foot traffic will be a major factor.

He says businesses in busy areas like the downtown core will most likely do well while those in quieter areas may struggle.

No, it's not a good deal for small businesses. I have to tell everyone they MUST stay away, then my (adult) kids come in to help and go through all their stuff trying to do half the job my employed staff does. My children are happy to get both a paid day off from their employers and be paid by me, but my staff hate this - they aren't allowed to work because of the "rules" and they come back to find their offices and desks in disarray. But we are here for the customers so we do what we have to - this is a lose-lose holiday for staff and me.

If BC is going to have a "family day" stat, why can't it be in line with the rest of the provinces? Last year my company's BC employees were mandated to take an unpaid day off, while some of the provinces enjoyed a paid stat. And calling it family day is not appropriate either. If your an essential service, work in retail, or the service industry, your most likely working today. Where is the family in that?

@DavidM_4081 How many of these so called employers fallow the rules and pay any overtime or give an extra day off?Not many people the the construction business unless they are big companies, they get to write it all off anyways, as most of them doI am sick and tired of having to pay for these company's hockey tickets and luches costing us taxpayer's 1 billion per yr.! Go NDP Go

@DavidM_4081 I agree that this stat should be in-line with the other provinces. Ontario's family day is on the 18th and that means the markets will be closed.
I opted to work today and will take next Monday off along with my ON counterparts.

Christy gave us a 'Family Day' off in February and Harper made it easier for us to spend more across the line.....................so now there is a huge lineup of cars heading south with their money this weekend for cheap US products while our small businesses hurt for customers at home. Oh, and don't forget that those dollars spent in the US will do nothing to help our provincial coffers for supporting our medical services, schools, roads, etc. Something those shoppers in the US don't think about - until they need them!
There is something seriously wrong with our senior governments that encourage spending outside of Canada at the expense of our own Canadians.
    1. bctaxpayer posted on 02/11/2013 10:30 AM
@LoniE We make a lot of purchases in the U.S. If we can save $$$$$$$$ why not?Great shopping there at least we do not get ripped off there.

@LoniE You are right. And typically it is those same people that complain about our medical, educations systems etc, being underfunded that are running across the border at any chance - like the commentor bctaxpayer.

bctaxpayer: How so? The NDP need 49% of the popular vote to form government. 48% and less makes them the official opposition party.
So little time left and so far away from getting that magic number of 49%.

@joes_2868 ...and yet the BC Fiberals are trailing the NDP by double digits, which makes them "about to be obliterated". That is my only goal. I live to see the day that the BC Lieberal party is virtually extinct in this province. They've done more damage to BC, in the shortest time, than any other party in history. Enough of the scare tactics, at taxpayer's expense. The BC Fiberals are much, much, much worse than any NDP government of the past. Billions of dollars in questionable spending, unbalanced budgets, massive provincial deficit, legislated destruction of BC Hydro, BC Rail scandal, "smart" meter program, horrendous lack of democracy, privacy rights trampled on, high child poverty and unemployment...the list goes on and on and on. What does CC4BC have? Some mole hill of a scandal, that doesn't compare to the above list. The BC Fiberals are done in this province, unless the voters of BC are complete idiots, or have lived under a rock for the last 12 years. What's your story?

@joes_2868 Nice try but the lie berals are 15 points behind Dix and losing points each week.Sorry risky but your childish attack ad's are working against you and your corrupt BC lie BERALS.

Businesses in BC have ridden the "gravy train" for far too long, and some of them will suffer from this holiday however, if one stat holiday is going to "break the bank" you shouldn't be in business anyway. Your margin for failure is too slim.

This holiday has been observed in many other provinces for many years. It's about time the BC Liberals delivered on this. The people of BC have deserved this holiday for a long time. Big surprise. We finally get it right before an election. I wonder what else they have up their sleeves, in the vote buying department.

Wow. Snookums Family Day" is here at last. Couldn't even go to Blaine for gas this morning. Don't want to sit in a two hour line up. Looks like the mailman didn't get Snookums family day off. The mail got delivered. And wow. Listen to all the people that have already been told that they will NOT be getting Boxing Day off as a stat. It seems that a lot of people would rather have Boxing Day at Christmas as family day You know, they travel to see their family. Their family travels to see them. After all, it's Christmas. I know that we are not supposed to say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" any more, but so what??? So what exactly did sookums and the rest of the LIE BERALS that slimed their way out of the septic tanks actually do. Seems like almost everything they have done. They can't think one step ahead.

I'll believe those businesses are suffering when I see it. I'll tell you what. You open your books to us and prove you are hard done by and then we will cry a river for you. If it were such a hardship you would close your doors. Instead you just drive a Mercedes up to the front of your shops. Cry me a river

      @DavidSB Dear DavidBS:
Never mind opening the books, open your eyes you stupid child of a bachelor. Have you not seen the number of empty store fronts and warehouses for sale/lease? Have you not heard of the number of young people that can't find jobs? Have you ever actually talked with business owners?

I deal with businesses (mainly small ones) on a daily basis. The comment I hear from more and more of the owners is "We are strapped for cash right now." or "We are barely making a go of it and can't afford your product."

The main reasons for the plight of small to medium size businesses include - excessive taxation, excessive bureaucracy and consumers not having a lot of discretionary funds to spend. All of these factors are intertwined with governments and their bureaucracies; wasteful spending, too many taxes and too many over paid, under worked, overly intrusive government employees.

To add to the fire, the BC Government decides to have a family day. At a time when a lot of businesses are struggling, the government adds another mandatory, paid holiday combined with one less day of production. Who pays for the holiday? Answer: The struggling business. Ultimately you, the customer, pays for it. You see business HAVE to pass their costs on to you; that is if they can afford a price increase without losing too many customers. Either way the business is the one being squeezed here. Great idea, huh! Isn’t government wonderful? Owning a small business is so wonderful in our current times.

All you do is BMW (witch with a "b", moan and whine) about business owners driving a Mercedes. A well-conceived comment! If they do, it's usually an old Mercedes. Many of the ones I meet aren't so lucky. Although I do see some rather expensive cars in many parking lots - quite often in front of government bureaucracies; and not in “visitors parking”.

I think you are a small minded individual that is jealous of the success of others. You are an indicator of one of the major problems in our province. Being too lazy to get off your but, many of you see someone in an expensive car and complain about them having one. You should be looking at that individual and think; "He's got a great car. How can I get one?" But remember, the acquisition of possessions should not be your only or prime goal in life. There’s much more to life than that. It’s just that having nothing sucks.

FYI: Do you know the definition of a socialist or communist? It’s someone that has nothing and wants to share it with everyone.

bctaxpayer: Just goes to show you that you have not done your calculations. Once again to remind you.

48% and under of popular vote EQUALS NDP OPPOSITION PARTY

49% plus of popular vote EQUALS NDP GOVERNMENT

@joes_2868 Looks like neither of you two know much about the electoral system. Try going back to school and staying awake this time. In the interim, please explain how, with 4 parties on the ballot, that the Offical Opposition & Governement can be decided by 48 & 49% of the popular vote. Math 101 should be able to tell you otherwise (Oh, I know... you slept through that as well?)

I totally agree with Lonie too many selfish, selfish people lined up at border crossings!!!! It should simply not be allowed. And the kicker is all those selfish people are the whinners who complain about paying taxes. There's another word that comes to mind stupid!!!!
Family day is not a bad thing it's nice to see people get a day off!!!

SusanJ_2218: There is a tax called SIN. This is the tax on tobacco, alcohol, and gasoline.
Everybody uses all three, some, or none at all.
In the U.S. the government is not harsh to the taxpayers on the amount of tax that is collected on these 3 items. The U.S. government is calling the tax within a reasonable amount.

In Canada, our governments are harsh on these 3 items when it comes to paying taxes.
So in doing so, the Canadian governments have created CBS. CBS stands for cross border shopping.

    SIN EQUALS CBS.

If the gas was the same price in the U.S. as here at home, that Blaine border crossing would not be that busy and cross border shopping would only happen when we go on a vacation.

The venom in some comments is funny to hear, yet sad to realize that some people just don't have a grasp of the issues. I think it should be mandatory that people do the research before commenting, but governments count on people not knowing, hence the "spin" used by all parites, on all levels of government. I continue to shop in the US, have for years, and save $1,000's every year as a result.

Some small business might not like it, some might like it. Depends on the type of business and how well they are run. But you know what isn't a great deal for me personally? Getting gouged all these years by greedy owners of small business because they think we, the paying public, somehow owe them a living. There is a simple reason why people go south of the border... lower prices and better service. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Business also had their frozen minimum wage and $6 starting wages for quite a few years. You didn't see them crying poor mouth when that happened, did you?

And thanks for the Family Day Christy but I still am not going to vote for you!

As always, interesting comments when it comes to cross border shopping plus Ken280s usual poor spelling and grammar. I realize that a # of things are cheaper in the states. But for some of you who do most of your shopping across the line, why then do you just not move there if it's so much better. Or actually what is it in Canada that keeps you here or benefit that you enjoy from being a BC or Cdn citizen? Also, many of you are talking as if Family Day is some sort of BC Liberal idea that no one else does. Other provinces have had it for years and you don't hear them complaining about it.

@DaveV_9512 According to the business commentator (Michael Campbell), investment or money flows to the jurisdiction that offers the lowest tax rate. Business will invest in places where taxes are low, wages are low and prices are low. Combined, these variables offer the potential for the greatest profit potential. In that sense, loyalty is trumped by the dollar.

By the same token, the consumer shops to maximize value for the hard-earned dollars spent. Consumers can be hardly blamed for cross-border shopping to realize better selction and lower prices.

The cross-border shopper then should not be told to move to the United States. They should not be criticized for looking for the best value. This has nothing to do with dis-loyalty or not loving Canada.

Besides, there is no reason to move there when the border is so convenient.

I am a regular cross-border shopper. That does not make me disloyal. I like to get the best bang out of my bucks.

I also fly the Maple Leaf iflag in front of my house-every day.
