BCGEU uses Family Day to urge the Province to implement affordable childcare

The BC Government and Service Employees' Union is using Family Day to push for more affordable childcare in this province.

"We're calling for a daycare system, a universal daycare system that everybody is able to tap into, that the people are well-paid and well educated, and we believe that at about ten dollars a day, families should be able to I think, make do with that," says Union President, Darryl Walker.

Walker adds the average cost for British Columbians is around nine thousand dollars a year for a two year old child.

He says in Vancouver, the amount jumps to fourteen thousand dollars a year.

The union is launching some online videos, and a website where families can petition the Government and opposition.

More than fifteen-hundred early childhood educations in the province are represented by the union.

fantastic idea, I can imagine you would have a lot more educated women back in the workforce if childcare here wasn't such a huge burden. In European countries, France for example, your taxes subsidize the majority of the cost and the government actually helps working parents, not penalizes them as government and employers tend to do here. BC is more concerned with funding the dregs instead of people with potential to work and make money, thus paying more taxes!

@lg_3045 Cute "lg_3045 But your post leaves out at least two very relevent facts. One,this is not Europe.Nor is being like Europe what most of us aspire for.And secondly, and most importantly, in your beloved France, public sector workers work for a whole lot less money. That is exactly why they are able to deliver better health care outcomes than our union run systems in Canada. Doctors and nurses don't pocket all the tax dollars that fund their system. It's a fair debate as to which model is the better of the two.But it's almost certain that we can't have BOTH the higher paid health care workers,AND the better patient outcomes. The math wil never add up.If taxpayers are forced to pay for day care here, the first thing that will happen is the cost of day care will go up.No one cares what it costs if the taxpayers are footing the bills. Like health care and education, only people who dig deeply into government budgets will know the true cost of providing these services. This is an extremely BAD idea.

I think this is a great idea for the unions to add more day care workers. The more members the stronger the union. The only problem i see is how does he plan on raising the money to accomplish his goal. The ndp already plan to raise corporate taxes which means the cost of food will be rising as corporations pass their costs on to products. Banks will be increasing their fees. people earning over 200000 will be paying higher taxes. We are talking millions here every year. My pocket is already empty so go ndp go.

@DenisL_3 Do you really think BC needs stronger public sector unions? I find that difficult to believe that anyone who works in the real world would agree with that.Is it really wise to have a public sector union run the day care centres at the same time as they run the school system. It is inevitable that they will like up with the BCTF so they can both go on strike at the same time.I believe you are mistaken in saying this will cost "millions".In my opinion, it will cost at least a BILLION $$$.Per year.

Maybe Daryl can tell us where the money would com from ?

Letme guess ? He wants. To plant more money trees ? No ?

Maybe he wants to raise taxes ??

Some how the equation doesn't balance

How about we raid the pensions of government workers and make. Them more in line with what workers get in private industry ? Now there is a pot of money !!
    1. DougB_25 posted on 02/11/2013 12:05 PM
@ChrisM_18 They are afraid to raise taxes,my friend. So any taxes they raise will be on business.Personal tax increases will be hidden in the rhetoric.
And,they will raise money for this in the same way they pay for health care and education.Byt stealing money meant to be used in other ministries. That is why we now have to pay tolls to cross a bridge, and $20 night to stay in a camp ground,or $100 for an annuall fishing license.Money that once funded those ministries has been re-directed to pay for more "free" social programs.

I think the government should provide some kindof benefit to women
who stay home and raise their children.

Being a mother is a fulltime job and takes alot of commitment
and responsibility and there is NO job more important than
providing the best opportunities for your children in terms of guiding
and teaching and being there for them.

@DeceitinDrugsD Best comment I have read on this site in days.

Our societies failure to provide lving care to our children , and instead replace it with institutionalized day care is going to come back and bite use very soon

Nothing can replace the guidance of a mother in the key formative years of a childs life - especially not the bored disinterest of a low paid worker who is there looking after several children at a time !!

We should be encouraging mothers or fathers to stay home. I'd rather tax money go towards this. Institutionalized day care is a poor substitute for a stay-at-home parent. Being a parent is the most important thing you can do with your life, why would you pass that job onto some stranger who makes $12 an hour? If you want or need to work so badly, don't have kids! You're not emotionally or fiscally ready.
    1. DougB_25 posted on 02/11/2013 12:17 PM
@JustS You are bang on "JustS". For many.many people their FIRST priority in ther lives are their children. They sacrifice a lot just so they can raise them themselves. But more and more taxes to pay for other people's "free" progams eventually force them to send both parents to work.If we want to raise more civilized children for the next generation, that is exactly the opposit of what we should be doing. This institutionalized program would place a higher value on some parents than other parents. In my view, parents who raise their own children are MORE valable than those who do not.The right process is to evolve to an economy than makes staying at home to raise a child a more viable option for as many people as possible.Parents are worth way more there than they are in a $15 per hour job.
Stand your ground. And PLEASE.Keep speaking up.To many people think that stay at home parents are not worth as much as parents who work.Do not let these unions and parents who want cheap day care to use their children as pawns to GUILT you into accepting their GREED.Taxpayers do plenty to subsidize their children already..

Social engoneering running amukJust imagine. As it is now, when the teachers union goes on strike, working parents are scrambling to find day care for their children. Now the unions want publicy funded day care, and their union buddies to run it.So,the next time the BCTF goes on strike, your day care centre is likely to be behind picket lines too.
This is a BAD idea folks.Everyone will pay for it,but only some will see the benefits. You have to be morally bankrupt to impose a major social program on 100% of the people with A) only the support of 50% + 1. And B) A program that everyone is forced to pay for,but only a few will benefit from. For example, rural citizens will pay,but residents in smaller BC towns will almost certainly get very few day care centres.BUT, they will have to pay for them anyway.
Think more deeply my friends. This is a path to yet another public sector initiative that will bleed you untill you are dry. Then, they will come back for more.

@DougB_25 Doug - your comments are right on the mark . The social engineering of the left wing thinkers in the province, whether it is raiding the coffers of volunteer organizations, institutionalizing daycare or forcing bike lanes down our throat is truly scary
Unfortunately - the people who are morally bankrupt here are. The Liberals and their cohorts -so I'm not sure what the short term future holds fir us !,

This is directed at the BCGEU and the Dix led socialists . I don't take credit it for the text - but it is so good its worth everyone reading it

"The problems we face today, are there because the people who work for a living in private industry are outnumbered by those who vote for a living".
    .

Put me in charge of government food grants. I'd get rid of cash for potato chips or chocolate, just money for 50kg bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away.
If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Healthcare. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligation. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings.
If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing.Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried.
If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

Put me in charge of compulsory job search. In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good.."

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.

Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self-esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self-esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

    AND

While you are on Govt subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest.....You will vote for a 'welfare' Govt. only. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Govt welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.
