why cant police just shoot them in the knee or somewhere they dont die. He obviously might have had some sort of mental issue. So sad. I feel for his family.

First of all, the knee or leg if difficult to shoot. Police are trained to shoot at center mass which is from the neck down to the hip as a first resort. In case you were not aware, there are very stressful moment when you have a gun pointed at someone who wants to stab you or someone else. Aiming a pistol is not the most easy thing to do contrary to all the Dirty Harry movies you've probably seen.

Another reason is that more times than not, shooting someone in the center mass will stop the threat. Shooting someone in the leg will not stop someone who is determined to stab you. If shooting someone in center mass does not stop the threat then the next option is the head.

@MicahC So what you are saying is the police are trained to kill not to restain a perp? Why the expense on stun guns, bean bag guns or battons? Why aren't police trained to keep calm and use deadly force only as a last resort? There are a lot of unanswered questions here.

@MicahC I don't watch police shows. I just care about the human life taken. I don't think murder is the answer. Just saying.

Most police training involves paper work and criminal law. Combine that with short cops and women police and you will have lethal force used more often.
When it comes to range practice, If my memory serves me, is around 50 rounds a year, not near enough to shoot strait. The police issue hand guns have a 4 pound trigger pull also making it harder to aim fast. The reason for the hard trigger pull is they feel it is less like to be pulled accidentally in these stressful situations.
