Engineers devise plan to combat Port Mann "ice-bombs"

Engineers working on the Port Mann bridge have come up with some solutions to hopefully prevent any more "ice-bombs" from forming on the cables and falling onto vehicles on the bridge deck below.


A custom-designed cable sweeper will be fitted onto the cables, removing snow and ice before it can build up.


The sweepers will be installed on all 152 cables crossing the roadway.


Engineers have also identified a de-icing solution that can be sprayed on the cables if need be.

More than 250 claims came in to ICBC after ice bombs fell on vehicles mid-December.

    If UCB students can hang BUG cars and suck on bridges
    HOW come these professional 'engineers' can't figure out a REAL deal for this TROLL Bridge?

    This should not be a time to TEST or PLAY games!

    Typical "BAINDAID" solution.....Sweepers pfffffft...tell me, too sweep where exactly? Please dont tell me its the roaday! Where else will the debris fall?

    Who approved this ? Was it that same clown Lekstrom who approved the gates at translink ? you know the ones you can either climb over or sneek under ?

    What a province...run by absolute incompetence.....

      @taxed to death maybe........ it is Chinese migrant workers hired to climb the cables and actually sweep - I hear the ONLY ones qulaified for this are from China

    ChrisW_18: If the NDP was in charge of the taxpayer cheque book, they would build that long awaited bridge from the mainland to Vancouver Island, except the final result would see the bridge from Nanaimo to Victoria.

    This shouldn't even be an issue. A bridge was built for California climate, and it won't work. Money to be refunded!

    The bridge designers failed, and it is not the taxpayers fault.

    A bandaid solution will not make this bridge safe in the winter!

    Wasn't this Kevin Falcons claim to fame?? I don't care what political party you are in. WE THE TAXPAYERS OF BC will be paying for this bridge for a very long time, Someone has to be held accountable. This is not a little WHOOPS!!

    engineers. LOL ..... A 12 year old could have come up with that brush wheels contraption. Engineers have a long standing history with bridges in Vancouver. Namely hanging a volkswagen off of them. but you know..... any bunch of boyscouts could hang a volkswagen off a bridge it sure dont take no degree.
