NDP critic wants investigation into BC Place reno costs
VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Sara Norman | Email news tips to sara.norman@corusent.com
1/14/2013

The NDP tourism critic is taking his fight to reveal the actual costs to renovate BC Place to the auditor-general.

Spencer Chandra-Herbert has written a letter to John Doyle, filing an official complaint to have him investigate.

Chandra-Herbert says it's not just about the original estimate coming in more than five times over budget.

"The casino issue, the loss of the Telus naming rights, no business case ever made publicly available to show what happened at BC Place and why did it have to be replaced at such a big expense. Was there another way to do the project?"

If Doyle agrees to look into it, Chandra-Herbert says it's unclear whether he will be able to complete the work before he is replaced next October.

It looks like a commercial for Imperial margarine. The cost for all the over runs the liberals have done always comes with the feel good story with these Free enterprise Coalition lots. The liberals can't do anything wrong. Now some of them want to boost the ranks of the BCCP now that the game is up on the Liberal/con coalition. They bad-mouth the ones that will fill their party very soon and tell us they are new! (even though you don't have to be an AG to figure this out...)

    So then what?
Do we get a refund? Price match? Airmiles? Star Sticker?
What does Chandra-Herbert want or expect out of this?
Or is he just looking for another name to add to his hyphenated list of last names??

Where are these people when the money is being spent and work being done????
Like usual - the NDP is a little late and just annoying now.......

How about the NDP gets current and talks about the present and current fluke ups - certainly there is enough of those going on right now!

Typical views of the left wing, if it was up to the lefties we would not have any venues like BC Place or any new bridges or highways. Spencer Chandra-Herbert is typical of the NDP, can always critisize but has never come up with any new ideas.

It is time for the government to once again remind the taxpayers about the cost overruns of Glen Clark's NDP government building of the inland Vancouver Island Highway project. The highest cost to taxpayers of highway construction in B.C. history.

@joes_2868 You really want to go back that far? What the NDP squandered in the 90's pales in comparison to the Liberals' spending spree: 500 million on BC Place, 6 million on two convicted criminals, Basi & Virk, 3 billion on a bridge we didn't need, selling an asset, BC Rail, etc. And how much did these Liberals give themselves in a raise? Wasn't it 45%? Don't get me started on the issue of government waste. If they're in power, they're wasting OUR money.

From the Winnipeg Free Press: Nova Scotia sours on NDP government:

A lot of Nova Scotians believe a former appliance repairman can fix the province's stubborn economic and fiscal problems-enough, in fact, to make Stephen McNeil a shoo-in for premier if an election were called today.

McNeil, a 48 year old who made the jump from small business owner to provincial politics a decade ago, leads a resurgent Liberal party that's riding high in the polls and threatening to make Nova Scotia's first NDP government a one term wonder.

The New Democrats are approaching their fourth year in power, fuelling speculation that Premier Darrell Dexter will call an election this year(unlike Manitoba, Nova Scotia has not introduced fixed term elections). But his government's sagging popularity, a struggling economy and and an unkept promise to balance the books could delay a vote well into 2014.

The NDP woes-and the Liberals gains-come despite some impressive accomplishments since June 2009, when the party won 31 of 52 seats and 45 per cent of the popular vote. The "orange crush", as pundits dubbed it, relegated a Progressive Conservative government to third party status.

Dexter has reined in spending and brokered a deal to save a paper mill and hundreds of jobs. He shared the glory when the Irving-owned Halifax Shipyard was tapped to build Canada's new fleet to warships, a deal that will pump billions of dollars into the provincial economy. Last fall, computer giant IBM announced it will open a Halifax data centre and hire up to 500 employees.

The job-creation initiatives have been costly-tax breaks for IBM, up to $260 million in forgivable provincial loans to the billionaire Irving clan to kick start the shipbuilding program-and have put the New Democrats in the odd position of being criticized as too cozy with big business.

The Liberals have scored points with attack ads urging voters to "take the chequebook away from the NDP"

And there have been plenty of setbacks and controversies to crown out these good-news headlines. Another paper mill and other factories have closed; jobs lost have offset many of the new ones created or promised.

Statistics Canada counted 5,000 jobs lost in December alone, pushing the province's unemployment rate to 9.3 per cent. With the national rate hovering at seven per cent and on the decline, it's no wonder Dexter has stepped back from the electoral brink.

The premier also has failed to deliver on a promise to balance the budget. The province projects a higher than expected $277 million deficit this fiscal year and is spending almost $900 miilion a year to service a debt that's well north of $13 billion.

It all adds up to some startling polling numbers. McNeil's Liberals, with just 13 seats in the legislature, won the backing of 41 per cent of decided voters in major polls conducted in August and November. NDP support slid from 31 to 29 per cent, barely eclipsing the 27 per cent support for the Conservatives and their leader, accountant and former political aide, Jaimie Ballie.

There's a silver lining for the NDP in these ominous numberss-four out of 10 respondents were undecided or have no plans to vote, and 3.5 per cnet margin of error may be inflating the Liberal numbers.

Dexter, for his part, appears ready to call an election as soon as the job figures and polling numbers improve.

"We have put in place a recipe for prosperity in the years to come," he asserted in a year end interview with CBC Radio, sounding very much like a leader test=driving his next campaign platform.

The government may be most vulnerable on the hot button issue of power rates. Nova Scotians pay some of the highest electric bills in the country and face a fresh round to rate hikes.

The fall session of the legislature was stormy, with the NDP targeting the Liberal frontrunner as Public Enemy No.1. A low point was reached when a government backbencher suggested McNeil's expertise on the issue of power rates was limited to "to power it takes to run a washer or a dryer."

IF THE POLLS ARE RIGHT, HE'S STILL THE KIND OF REPAIRMAN NOVA SCOTIANS WANT TO PUT IN CHARGE.

FROM PROBE RESEARCH IN MANITOBA: DEC 2012 PROVINCIAL PARTY STANDINGS-PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES TAKE THE LEAD:

For the first time since winning a historic fourth term in October, 2011, Manitoba's governing New Democratic Party is no longer the first choice for Manitoba voters, a new Probe Research survey conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press shows.

The Progressive Consevative Party, with new leader Brian Pallister, has taken a slight lead over Premier Greg Selinger's NDP, with 43 per cent of decided voters, currently idicating that they would vote for a PC candidate in a hypothetical election (up from 39% in September) Support for the NDP, meanwhile, has dropped in the past three months (from 45% in September to 39% in this current sounding.)

THIS IS CALLED POLITICAL CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH TAXPAYERS IN NOVA SCOTIA AND MANITOBA ARE DOING.

YOU ALSO HAVE TO APPLY THIS POLTICAL CONSUMER AFFAIRS IN B.C. JUST LIKE WHEN YOU ALL GO OUT AND PURCHASE SOMETHING WHEN IT COMES OUT OF YOUR HIP POCKET.

YOUR HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF WHY?

WHY DID THE NDP GOVERNMENT OF DAVE BARRETT IN B.C. ONLY LAST ONE TERM AND THEN GET VOTED OUT?

WHY DID THE NDP GOVERNMENT OF GLEN CLARK ONLY WIN RE-ELECTION WITH A 3 SEAT MAJORITY OVER THE OPPOSITION?

WHY IS IT THAT IN THE ALBERTA LEGISLATURE, THERE IS ONLY 4 NDP MLA'S?

WHY IS IT THAT IN THE LAST SASKATCHEWAN PROVINCIAL ELECTION, THE NDP, THE OFFICIAL OPPOSITION PARTY HAD 20 SEATS BEFORE THE ELECTION AND ONLY 9 SEATS AFTER THE ELECTION EVEN WHEN THEY WERE OPPOSITION PARTY GOING INTO THE ELECTION?

WHY DID THE SASKATCHEWAN NDP LEADER LOSE HIS SEAT?

HOW COME SASKATCHEWAN, ONCE HOME TO NDP COUNTRY OF TOMMY DOUGLAS NOT HAVE ONE FEDERAL NDP MP ELECTED TODAY?

HOW COME THE NDP IN ONTARIO ONLY HAS 17 NDP MLA'S AND IS THE THIRD PARTY IN THE PROVINCE?

HOW COME THE NDP GOVERNMENT OF BOB RAE IN ONTARIO ONLY LASTED ONE TERM AND WAS VOTED OUT?

HOW COME QUEBEC, NEW BRUNSWICK, AND PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, DOES NOT HAVE ONE NDP MLA IN THEIR PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE?

HOW COME NEWFOUNDLAND ONLY HAS 5 NDP MLA'S?

AND WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR A NDP GOVERNMENT IN B.C. WHEN IN FACT YOU WOULD VOTE THEM OUT IN 2017?

DON'T BLAME WHO IS GOVERNMENT! YOU THE VOTERS ARE TO BLAME FOR YOUR VOTING PATTERNS AT THE VOTING BOOTH.

Fact: Telus, a publically traded corporation, not a Crown Corporation as you would have some believe, did not bid high enough offer to warrant the change in naming. Not only would this cause significant issues for BC Places second largest tenant, it was not worth the ROI. I would suggest the BC Liberals hold a public investigation & review on the BC NDP's as to the stupidity of their own grandstanding and obvious fact that they feel the public purse can be opened anytime they think they want to screw over any political opponent. Reality Check: Excellent comments!

I would like to add to it: From CTV.ca news in Ottawa, dated Wed, Mar 27 2002,FORMER B.C. MINISTER SAYS HE DIDN'T APPROVE A CASINO LICENCE FOR CLARK FRIEND:

A casino proposal by a friend of former premier Glen Clark was not a particularly good proposal and was not going to be recommended for approval, the former gaming minister testified Wednesday.

Mike Farnworth said the casino application by Dimitrios Pilarionos did not score well and that he was convinced about Pilarinos' friendship with his boss.

"I was also concerned from the political optics point of view with the fact that one of the applicants was a friend of the premier, " Farnworth said, HIS VOICE DROPPING TO A WHISPER AS HE TESTIFIED IN B.C. SUPREME COURT.

The former New Democrat cabinet member said he was not going to recommend that cabinet grant approval in principle to the proposal for a charity casino at the North Burnaby Inn.

But the application was granted approval in principle at a cabinet meeting in July 1998.

Farnworth was so concerned about Clark's friendship that he met with THEN PREMIER'S CLOSEST CONFIDANT, HIS PRIMARY SECRETARY ADRIAN DIX TO DISCUSS THE MATTER.

"I said, you know, it dosen't look good. This has the potential for problems," Farnworth said.

DIX REPLIES, "IN POLITICS, IT'S CALLED OPTICS. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING FRIENDS, EVERYBODY HAS FRIENDS. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM BEING INVOLVED IN BUSINESS. IT'S JUST THAT THERE IS A SENSITIVITY THERE AS TO HOW IT LOOKS IN THE EYES OF THE PUBLIC."

Clark is now on trial for breach of trust and accepting a benefit. Pilarinos is charged with nine counts, including fraud and offering a benefit.

The Crown contends Clark offered his political influence in exchange for $10,000 worth of renovations to his home and cottage.

Clark has said that he told Farnworth when he was appointed gaming minister in February 1998 that a friend of his was involved in a casion proposal.

    Farnworth agreed.

"He told me that one of the applicants was a friend of his." he testified for the Crown. "He didn't say anything else about his friend other than he didn't want to be involved in the decision making process."

Clark didn't tell Farnworth who his friend was or which application he was involved with, he said.

Farnworth did find out who Pilarinos was, however, in part because Pilarions presented a business card of the premier to gaming ministry staff at one point.

Clark met with Farnworth in the days before he was given the plum job of employment and investment minister.

The porfolio included responsibility for gaming, which the then NDP government was trying to expand.

Farnworth said he was surprised by the high-profile appointment, in which he replaced veteran MLA Dan Miller as minister.

Farnworth said Clark briefed him on his portfolio, explaining what was going on in each area.

"HE SAID, IF YOU F**K UP, I'LL FIRE YOU" HE SAID.

It was unclear how Farnworth interpreted that warning at the time.

Of 13 casino and bingo applications in the greater Vancouver area, Farnworth only recommended approval of two.

He said government objectives and the nature of the proposals were considered in his recommendations. But the score was of tantamount importance.

"I picked, by and large, with the exception of one, the high scores, " Farnworth testified.

The North Burnaby Inn proposal scored only 46 per cent according to criteria set out by gaming experts. Others, some with scores as high was 70 per cent, were not recommended for approval.

Both purchased by taxpayer dollars and both never operated again.

Also former owners of the mills both said from a investment point of view, both mills were not worth spending any money on to update their potential.

You will remember that Glen Clark did have meetings with the Australian giant, HOLYMAN, the world leader in the building of fast cat ferries.

They told him, that fast cat ferries were not meant for B.C. waters and that they offered him to lease one of their ferries just to prove to him that they were right.

What did he do? He ignored what they said and went ahead to blow millions of taxpayer dollars.

Is this fair of a premier to do this when he won re-election with only a 3 seat majority over the opposition party.
