Political group calls for free Transit rides
Vancouver (AM980)

With Transit fares going up again in the New Year one Vancouver civic party says "enough is enough" and is calling for free transit rides downtown.

Former Vancouver councillor with the Coalition of Progressive Electors Tim Louis says Translink should be looking at making certain areas of the system free.

Louis says Seattle and Portland already offer free rides along certain sections of their transit lines.

He says "we need to keep working on getting ridership up by reducing and eliminating fares wherever possible."

Louis also says there's a tipping point for fare increases becasue he says at some point a percentage of riders will decide to get back their their vehicles.

heres a question for you, who do you think should pay for your so called free rides? maybe you could ask Translink employees to work for free, maybe you could get your fuel donated, or how about maybe asking the Liberals to pay for it cause they want to get re-elected. There is no free ride, get use to paying more just like those of us that dont use Transit and pay with our gas purchases and propert taxes.

@brianp1950 Maybe, toll going downtown to pay for it? What's that noise??? Your head exploding??

@brianp1950 Another example of those who feel their sense of entitlement should be handed out on a silver platter! The centre of the universe (Vancouver) continues to baffle me as to why they should get anything free when the rest of the Lower Mainland continue to get crumbs compared to Vancouver! Look out Vancouver - Surrey is about to take over as the largest city in the province....

    Wow, communism at its finest.

By the way, Seattle recently STOPPED making their transit free in the downtown core.

@WilliamS_3961 Very true William Even Adrian Dix, leader of the NDP was found on the sky-train with no ticket.

Do what Calgary does. All rides on the C-Train within the downtown core are free. However, as soon as the free zone end there are representatives right there on the next ride checking tickets and issuing fines.

I wonder how many of these "free ride wanter's" blow a gasket when their weed, meth or crack goes up in price? You make a free zone around those 4 blocks of Hastings and Main and all you do is create mobile hotels. The poor bus drivers on those routes. I believe Seattle has ended the free zone.

Charge and extra $1 if they put a bike on the front or the bus.

You should know that both Portland and Seattle cancelled their free transit service due to budget problems in September. When I heard this story I checked, its all over google. Who didn't check this?
