One man is dead, another is in hospital after a concrete retaining wall collapsed on them this morning in north Burnaby.

Worksafe BC's Megan Johnston says the two were laying pipe in a trench at the time.

It's not clear why the wall gave way.

"Investigators are looking into this incident.  The employer was  J. Cote & Son Excavating."

It happened at a work site near Edinburgh Street and Gilmore Avenue.

The condition of the man in hospital is not known.
