Abbotsford Police are taking what they call the "extraordinary step" of releasing a public notification following the release of a serial offender.

John James St. Jean is out of jail after serving two years for domestic assault.

Constable Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police says his department felt a notification was necessary to protect the public, especially women, given St. Jean has over two dozen convictions and a history of domestic abuse.

"We have interviewed some of his past victims and on many occasions they have told us that if they had known about his past behaviour, they wouldn't have engaged in a relationship with him."

The 43 year old is banned from Abbotsford and must disclose his criminal record to those he wants to enter a relationship with.

St. Jean is 6'0 tall and 190 pounds.
