City wasn't in the loop on planned Kits base closure

Vancouver's Deputy City Manager has told council he had no idea the federal government was planning to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard station until he read about it in a newspaper.

Sadhu Johnston is refuting government claims key stakeholders were consulted.

He adds recent meetings with the feds have not gone well.

"The direction we've been given is this is happening and everyone's going to have to deal with it, basically.  We have, in each of those meetings, expressed our serious concern about the gap that will be created here."

After the base shuts down next year, coast guard service will come from Sea Island in Richmond, although a Vancouver-based rescue boat is set to operate during the summer.

Johnston says that's not good enough.

He notes two thirds of "life at-risk" calls are received during the winter months.

If the boaters who wish for the coast gaurd base to stay open, can they not pay a user fee to make up the money to keep it? I understand that boaters run out of gas, get caught up in severe weather etc, can the boater not pay a rescue fee to the government to help them out similar if I needed to have a tow truck help me, I don't expect the government to provide that service to me free of charge.

@SpiltB It was not an option offered by the federal government.
First preventable death the coastguard will get sued and it will cost more than the operating the coastguard base. No Problem. The inquiry will cost millions and we will be worse off.

@SpiltB If you call the Coast Guard because you ran out of gas, they will suggest you drop your anchor if you are at risk of being blown or washed ashore and will help you get in touch with a commercial service like C-Tow or Vessel Assist (which offer tow-truck like services and auto club like memberships), or a good samaritan vessel, or the Auxiliary (now called RCMSAR).

Please remember this is not just about boaters running out of gas etc. Anything that happens on the water, coast guard is called to act as medics if someone should happen to be on board a boat, assisting in fire situations on or around the water, rescuers for someone who may have fallen in and much more. People have to get over the rich guy on his boat excuse as the ones that do have money aren't the ones who need the help.
