Transportation Minister Mary Polak has announced travelling across the new Port Mann bridge will be free for the first week it's open in December, and it's officially the widest bridge in the world.

Hundreds of workers who helped build the new 10-lane crossing are gathered near the Surrey side for a barbecue and celebration.

The bridge is not slated to open until December and it's obvious more work must still be completed but the massive structure is impressive.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak arrived in a red convertible wearing sunglasses and a scarf, ala Grace Kelly in the 50's or 60's, when the original Port Mann Bridge opened.

It is a beautiful structure. I have had the opportunity to crawl all over it and have to say it is and engineering marvel and a salute to the men and women who built her. The new Portmann Bridge is the lifeline, the backbone of Vancouver's lower mainland and encumbering people and businesses with a reasonable toll in this case I would have to say is totally worth it. Now all we have to do is agree on what reasonable means, with our politicians involved in the process that might be a tall order. JVR

Grace Kelly she is not. She is just one of the lieing lieberals trying their last hand at scamming the sheep.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@BY This " Lieberals" is getting very old. Why don't you come up with a new one and while you are at it explain what you think of Mr. Dix who absolutely lied. Remember he had to resign from gov't. Don't think any Liberals have done that.

@BY I wonder how much her "Grace Kelly" appearance is costing us??!! As for RoseH_1028, no Liberals never lie, just like they never get caught drunk driving...but instead, they get promoted to Queens Bench after the biggest lie EVER...can you say HST??!!!
As for the "free" month...wow I'm beside myself with excitement! ;O) They'll have to toll every bridge or the "free" bridges will be triple traffic...just glad I don't have to commute over one! (Good luck to those that do, try to hang onto your wallets!)

Give me a break! Polak is an idiot. She probably doesn't have to use nor pay tolls so she is all happy about it like a fool would be! Enjoy higher priced food though, the trucking industry promises to pass the toll onto their customers. YOU!

By: RoseH is so correct. By, please explain to us readers why Adrian Dix is bringing in Brian Topp to be his campaign manager. At one time, Brian was deputy chief of staff to NDP premier Roy Romanow of Saskatchewan. In early February of 1999, Brian made the front page headlines of all newspapers in Saskatchewan. He was accused of whitewashing a legal committee report on a major political NDP scandal involving the botched sale of a government owned Channel Lake Petroleum Ltd., the natural gas producer for crown corporation SaskPower. This whitewashing is the same as Adrian Dix back dating a letter-memo for casino related Glen Clark.
And your other buddy, Mike Farnworth. Was promoted to a key ministry as minister by Glen Clark at the same time that Glen Clark was involved with a friend about applying for a casino licence. Told Mike Farnworth, that if he screwed up, he would be fired. Farnworth went to Chief of Staff, Adrian Dix, to discuss over the situation and thought something sounded fishy. At least we can give Mike some credit. Was told by Dix, it pays to know people in high places, and don't worry, just do as Clark says. Farnworth did give approval for the licence, later saying in court that he would have not given approval knowing the circumstances behind the North Burnaby Inn. Here we have a cabinet minister, now a opposition critic today, always blowing a gasket saying that B.C. Liberals never produce a business plan on their decisions. Farnworth, sure did not do any background checks on the North Burnaby Inn, but yet gives a licence. Don't preach if you don't practice it. I guess Mike listens to the Pope. The Pope talks about birth control but never practices it.

FionaD: Speak for yourself. You mention about someone with a drunk driving charge. I was at the Seattle airport waiting for a flight to Victoria, B.C. coming back from vacation, in 1974. We had a drunk trying to get on the plane. He was so drunk but quiet, that they did not want him to get on the plane. His wife said that she would take full responsibility and the flight was only 30 minutes. The drunk was the NDP premier of B.C. The man was on vacation and I was on vacation. He does comment about me, and I did not have to comment about him. The man was on vacation and on his time. When clearing customs in Victoria, he did not get any special treatment either. Treated like a normal person. Have you ever been drunk?

@joes_2868 The ignorance in your post joe show's the typical lieberal mentality. An intoxicated PASSENGER on a plane compared to an intoxicated premier of bc driving a vehicle is no comparison what so ever! How about the sale of BC Rail, or what was it they were originally investigating when they raided the legislature. HMMMM had nothing to do with BC rail. The mexican involved with CC. Let's connect the dots. What is Mexico famous for hmmm. The Lieberals are nothing more than the most corrupt form of govt. in canadian history. This province has no chance with people like you and the liberals who find it acceptable that children go to bed hungry every night, and pray your child stays healthy because in BC, to even get what is a life saving test (MRI) you only have to wait 18 months, and while your in hospital you get to leave with a gift, C. difficile. Before the lieberals will address these problems they need to spend millions to discuss it to come to the conclusion, we have no funds, but oh CC can fly back and forth to China to meet with her EMPLOYERS.

@joes_2868 First and foremost, I WAS speaking for myself and no one else, public forum consistently of personal comments/impressions etc.
Secondly, your incident, yes I agree no problems he was getting on a plane heading home, BUT, the Premier I was talking of was caught DRUNK DRIVING not walking onto a plane, but DRIVING!!! I don't disagree with anyone having one too many on vacation, and yes I have had one too many in my time, BUT, I did NOT drive a car as our most recent ex-premier did! (his reward, Queens Bench)

What will Polac do after the election if she is elected which I doubt.I do not trust the BC lie berals at all as they have lied to us tooooooo long starting with corrupt dictator Gordo you all remember him, what a lier he is.

@bctaxpayer You sound like a bot. I think that's what you are. You're on repeat, right?

We want a toll on ALL bridges and Sea to Sky hwy. Why do the dumb BC lie berals not charge a toll of 50 cents to $1 on all bridges and Sea to Sky it appears so simple but when you have simple people running the government this garbage is what you get.Yes it is time for Dix and Cummin's to get this Prov. on track.

NORMOREC: You have to have me around because our B.C. media are not doing their jobs. I read, research, then criticize comparing apples to apples. You my friend are doing the same as Mike Farnworth. Blowing gaskets and raising your blood pressure. Leave that up to him. Also you are shooting from the hip like Adrian Dix and having your mind in the twilight zone. Please answer the following so we know where you stand. Do it before Adrian Dix plans to do it someday. Why is the NDP history in Saskatchewan and Ontario? Why are they going to be history in Nova Scotia? Why is it that after 9 elections in Canada, all the polls have been proven wrong? Why is it that from 1952 to 2013, B.C. would have had 48 years of coalition governments and only 13 years of NDP governments? If Adrian Dix did win the election, please explain why he would be booted out in 2017? If you are not happy with the present government in B.C., then create one. The NDP as the replacement is just udder nonsense.

BCTAXPAYER: Rule of thumb. NDP strongholds will be won by the NDP and Liberal strongholds will be won by the Liberals. After the final results are counted on election day, either party will be government only with at the most a 10 seat majority over the other. The Conservatives will not win one seat.

This is quite the little forum you have going here folks. It's gone from a politician, busting her ass for a decent photo-op, which was a massive flop, to the next provincial election outcome. Entertaining reading, in between coats of paint on my patio.

Has airhead Dix actually said what he will do with the tolls? I haven't heard from him saying he'll rid of the toll, toll all bridges and sea-to-sky or anything to that matter.

Why are people running to a man who hasn't had to answer any questions yet?
