Two more MLA's have decided to pack it in.

Abbotsford-Mission liberal MLA Randy Hawes is retiring.

The former Mission mayor was first elected to the Legislature in 2001.

Hawes becomes the 14th sitting Liberal MLA to announce his retirement.

And North Coast MLA Gary Coons is also calling it quits.

The New Democrat was elected in 2005 and has served as the party's critic for BC Ferries.

I guess all ministers that didn't get a portfolio are quitting and the chosen few "some with more than 1 portfolio" are staying. The cabinet is split....again! This just gets better and better!

@CosmicS There are a few just wanting to retire because they want to retire...period. The younger ones are just moving on because it's time. Some may actually win their ridings, but choose to step down to embrace something else.

A NDP MLA resigns. 7 year veteran, I wonder what his reason is.

I was surprised to see a NDP MLA quitting. That's now 3 of them. More to come on their side as time goes on. I guess Gary can see the true colours behind Adrian Dix's mask of Mr. Nice Guy, before a election. Gary will not admit it, but he knows that he cannot hold a cabinet post sitting as a opposition member. Gary knows that every poll taken in Canada has been wrong and even though he won't admit, his resigning is saying the B.C. Liberals will win the election.

he stayed long enough to get a government pension....

BOBF: Correct, but the pensions do not kick in until age 65. Vaughn Palmer of the Vancouver Sun did a search about MLA pensions. Gary turned 62 on August 13. Three more years before collecting. Gordon Campbell still not collecting either, not age 65 yet.

People like michael_4092 and bc taxpayer are so naive. Like many people today, government to them is a super nanny, and when the super nanny doesn't produce the goodies they want, then they want a new super nanny in charge. Wah Wah.

Many people are quitting because they are getting on in years. There are better things to do in life than spend your time in stupid meetings and listening to do-nothing whiners complain. Being in politics takes people away from families and even for younger people, some have to put their career on hold and many never recover. None of these people owes it to anyone to run again.

We are not getting candidates who have solid experience and proven judgement. The reason is that people who possess these attributes have better things to do than to get involved in infantile debates about trivial issues. They want to actually get things done, something that is very difficult in government these days.

@Jartann Thanks for the shout out Jartann, I love generalizations, so easy to make.

So I'm trying to follow you. These Liberals quitting and jumping ship are because they are too old? Can't handle meetings?

Isn't the justification for their PAY that we hire the best of the best all the time? And they're what? TOO OLD AND DON'T LIKE MEETINGS???????????????????

      AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
      hahahahahahahahaa

@Jartann So if I read this correctly,Crissy clown is such a do nothing whiner and complainer who calls stupid stupid meetings?

Why would these cream of the crop young politicians not just get rid of the whiner and richie and form up an honest party to fairly run the province?

BCtaxpayer: you did not explain your reasons. Cannot believe in the polls as 9 elections in Canada already proved every poll wrong. If you want to believe Adrian Dix or Jim SinClair then you might as well believe that the world is coming to an end. For us readers, give us your reasons, not comments shooting from the hip. We get enought of that from the NDP opposition members.

@joes_2868 bctaxpayer has not contributed in a conversation here before. Far easier to put down and make "beral" and "crispy" comments as opposed to why the BC NDP are the better choice.

In either case, people are entitled to retire at a time that works for them. Personally, if you're 62 or 63 and decide to retire now I applaud you. I far better prefer that over someone who will run and then at age 65 retire leaving a riding without representation. To me, that is greed and selfishness. When one doubts their continuation of being a public servant then they should consider retiring and do what's right for their riding.

I do not care who the politician is, when they retire I thank them for their service whether I agreed with their views or not. Politicians all have their beliefs just as voters do. We may not all agree with those views, but those views are there for a reason.

Serving big business or serving unions, no matter the case, all politicians serve with intent to accommodate their beliefs!
