The Canadian Office and Professional Employees' Union local 378 is set for a one-day strike at 21 ICBC locations throughout BC, but it could signal further action.

President of COPE local 378 David Black hopes the job action will put pressure on the government to come to a deal with its employees.

"Unfortunately everything we've done has been unsuccessful, so we've been left with no option but to do this now and we hope this is successful and we can get a fair and reasonable settlement, but if not then we may have to look at doing something else."

Unionized ICBC workers have been working without a contract for two years.

WOW!!! A one day strike.....that`ll send a message. Get off the fence and go all out or get back to work. Where did this one day strike crap come from. Also, it`s not across the board, it is only in selected locations. How ineffective!

When BC Hydro were faced with this situation they started to look at contracting out routine clerical work and dd so. Seems to me ICBC will probably look at doing the same. They are already looking at raising the insurance rates. The last raise was given when times were good. Today not so good plus most workers are higher paid than the private sector. Govt needs to hold the line.

@DenisL_3 " Govt needs to hold the line. "

I'm sure you can tell the Liberals this when they vacate Victoria after the next election. You are out of touch with reality and it would be a waste of time to explain to you why.

This is the result of electing a NDP government in 1972, the one's responsible for bringing in government owned car insurance. Past NDP governments in Saskatchewan and Manitoba also brought in government owned car insurance. Today, B.C. Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, have the highest car insurance rates in Canada. The other 7 provinces can shop the market for their insurance rates just like when we have the freedom to shop and compare with other items such as a car, furniture, or a new roof on the house, etc. In 1975-1976, B.C. taxpayers had to bail out our government run insurance company in the amount $181 million ($645 million in 2006 dollars), just two years after it had begun operations. This money has never been repaid. At the same time, ICBC had been so mismanaged, with insurance being sold significantly underpriced, that the government was forced to increase rates by at least 25%, all because of B.C. taxpayer voting patterns. Cannot blame the NDP, just the taxpayers that go to the voting booth basing their vote on propaganda and not facts and reality, and yet everyone of them gets a maintenace inspection done on homes that they buy. Unbelievable, but true! Always remember, GOVERNMENTS ARE ALL THE SAME! EXCEPT SOME ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS.
