A study by the Mayo Clinic shows almost half of surveyed doctors experienced some symptom of burnout--and when it comes to doctors here in BC, the case is the same.

Dr. Andrew Clarke is executive director of the Physician Health Program of BC.

He says a study was done in 2008 that found similar results in BC and in Canada.

"it's a graded scale, so the fact that anybody can be experiencing some symptoms of burnout at anytime, doesn't necessarily mean that they're incapacitated by it."

Clarke says he doesn't think the study means people need to worry about their physicians.

He says one symptom of burnout is someone doubting how effective they are in their job.

But he says often, their colleagues still see them as effective.

Obviously Dr. Clarke doesn't want to acknowledge the meaning of the word burnout. It's not about limiting your ability but mainly not having the energy to do a full day's work.
By not letting doctors rest we are risking having errors and omissions in our care. Doctors can't be exploited like if they were doing manual work, they do one of the most intellectual and multidisciplinary profession in our society.
We need more doctors now and soon many more will be retiring, we should be very worried about doctor burnout.
