Be careful after visiting petting zoos

4/7/2008

A Vancouver ecology organization is calling for Canada to ban all petting zoos after their investigation uncovered unsanitary conditions.

The Lifeforce Organization claims that many Lower Mainland animals and their pens are covered in excrement. Making matters worse, children often play in those areas and touch the animals.

Executive Director Peter Hamilton says that often results in illness, "Petting zoos are hotbeds of serious pathogens such as e-coli, and countless children in BC have become severly sick as a result of visiting these petting zoos."

Metro Vancouver Parks say that their pens are frequently cleaned and the animals are well cared for.
