Holdouts: A fast lane to mediocrity

Posted 8/14/2010 7:22:00 AM
My theory is once a player holds out, their career is about to go downhill. Take Pavel Bure for example. He amassed nearly 500 points with the Canucks before his unfortunate departure. Now I know he had a few good seasons with the Panthers, but his career was cut way to short by injury at the turn of the century. I blame this on his holdout.

My next example is a player who held out before his career even began, Jamarcus Russell. The 25 year old should just be coming into the prime of his career but the former first round pick got greedy. He held out over all of training camp and week 1 before signing a $68 million contract, with $31.5 million guaranteed with Oakland. Jamarcus and the Raiders had a messy divorce this past spring. Jamarcus came into OTAs over weight and out of shape and is ...

"We" need some time apart

My biggest pet peeve in the sporting world is when a fan refers to a team as “we”. Like Kevin Costner in Bull Durham truly believes in the hanging curveball, I really do believe every fan should be referring to every team as “they”.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule but people who refer to teams as “we” believe that they are some how a part of that team. Wearing your team’s jersey in your beer league game every week makes you no more part of the team then your girlfriend who only takes an interest in sports because you thrive on it so much.

The exceptions:

- Players with greater than 1 regular season game played for the club.
- Players who retired as a member of that team.
- Owners, management and other workers.
- Students who attended a school. (IE – I attend SFU “we ...

Two strokes for hitting out of turn.

This week’s Canadian Open is taking place at St. Georges in Toronto. It’s an old fashioned golf course, just like next year’s tournament which will take place at Shaughnessy golf course out here in Vancouver.

This tournament isn’t what it once was. I think any fan with a remote interest in professional golf remembers that shot by Tiger Woods in the 2000 Canadian Open. It was Sunday, nearly dark and Tiger hit a 6 iron from just over 200 yards away out of the sand to capture the illustrious Triple Crown of Golf.

But I must ask, who is Dean Wilson and when will golf’s greats return to the great white north?

The answer is an obvious and simple one. The PGA needs to show Canada some respect by changing the date and Dean Wilson is the current leader at the Canadian Open.

And the field will not get any ...

Building an Empire

Sometime in June, I attended the media tour of Empire Field. I liked what I saw but I really did think to myself that this stadium was a temp. I did not attend the first exhibition game; I heard some good things and some bad things but mostly that a lot of people thought it was a temporary structure.

At about 7:02 last night, as I am sitting in the very last row of the south end zone, looking out over the beautiful view of the North Shore Mountains, with the sun still high in the sky and the crowd a sea of orange with tiny pockets of green I changed my mind. This stadium has to stay.

I have one thing going for me that a lot of other football fans don’t here, the nostalgia factor. I wasn’t around for the first edition of Empire and I think it ...
