What a great summer we’re having! The weather has been perfect for getting out on my Cannondale hybrid from the fine folks at Cap’s Westwood Cycle. I love riding by the ocean so the Stanley Park seawall has become a favourite. The seawall in West Vancouver from Ambleside to Dundarave is awesome with great views of English Bay and out into the Strait. And it’s all flat! Makes a nice change from huffing and puffing up and down the North Shores many steep hills! Though I have to say cycling does do wonders for your stamina and is a perfect way to lose a few pounds. Stay tuned more adventures to come.
A Spectacular Ride

Your cycling correspondent can reliably report that the 22 km ride up to the Seymour Dam and back was spectacular. After peddling up and down the streets of my Lynn Valley neighbourhood and touring the Stanley Park seawall, I decided I was fit enough to take on my short term challenge of making it to Seymour Lake where a significant amount of Metro Vancouver’s drinking water comes from. The scenery was B.C. beautiful, especially the run along a dirt and gravel path called the Old Growth Trail. The name says it all. Just gorgeous. I’m getting used to the 24 speed Cannondale from Cap’s Westwood cycle. I have to say those lower 8 gears came in handy as I huffed and puffed my way up the not insubstantial hills along the way. Proving once again the right equipment can make all the difference. Stay tuned... the adventure continues...
First Run

I’ve had the Cannondale out for a couple of rides this week. The first one was a spin around the neighbourhood to get accustomed to gear shifting and braking. I have to say the disk brakes on this bike are a real upgrade from the old hand brakes I remember.
My 2nd journey was a lot more substantial. I wheeled over to the Rice Lake Gate at the bottom of the Seymour Demonstration Forest. There is a paved road that runs about 11kms to the Seymour Dam…which is my short term goal. I made it about 2 kms but after having huffed and puffed my way up Lynn Valley Road (stopping 3 times to get my breath) I figured that was enough for now. I’m heading for Cap’s Westwood Cycle tomorrow to pick up a few accessories like a water bottle holder, a good lock and perhaps a mirror. Having ...

I picked up my new Cannondale hybrid bicycle from Cap’s Westwood Cycle and I’m super impressed with the lengths they go to make sure the bike is a perfect fit!
J.J. is the guy in charge of the process. He’s a kinesiology student at S.F.U. and spent about an hour making sure I had the proper leg extension to the pedals, that the handlebars were right for my riding style (novice) and giving me some tips about dealing with a 24 speed bike!
He also helped me pick out the all important helmet, running through the pros and cons of each make and model. We talked about other accessories like locks, fenders (for riding in the wet), reflective gear for visibility and some other tweeks and adjustments I can make after putting some mileage on the bike.
Now that the weather is better I’m all set to hit the road. ...
