Arceneaux returns to Lions den

It appears wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux is returning to the B.C. Lions with reports he’s signed a two-year contract with the club.

Arceneaux enjoyed a breakout 2010 season with the Lions that saw him collect 67 receptions for over 1100 yards. What followed was NFL interest where Arceneaux spent the next two seasons, first signing a practice roster contract with the Minnesota Vikings followed by a stint in Washington and finally some time with the New York Jets. Arceneaux didn’t see any NFL game action and after the two year experiment he returns north of the border to try and regain his CFL form.

Miller Leaving Whitecaps For Home?

A report in a Scottish newspaper (Scottish Sun) claims Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Kenny Miller could be heading back home -- for good!

The 33-year-old is reported to be close to signing a contract with the Glasgow Rangers.

A nagging hamstring injury has limited Miller's MLS minutes so far this season.

He hasn't played since a March 30 game against Chivas USA.

Whitecaps Draw Timber

Second-half substitute Jose Valencia scored in the 83rd minute to give the Portland Timbers a 2-all draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Will Johnson also scored for Portland and assisted on the equalizer to help the Timbers (4-1-7) extend their unbeaten strike to 10 games.

The tying goal came while Portland was playing with 10 men due to Mamadou Danso's ejection 2 minutes earlier.

Camilo had a goal and an assist, and Gershon Koffie also scored for the Whitecaps (3-4-4).

Valencia scored after receiving a long, high lob from Johnson. Valencia and a defender went up for the ball in box before Valencia gathered it and tucked a short shot inside the near post.

The Caps are now idle until they host the Montreal Impact in the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship May 29 at BC Place.

Edler To Miss Remainder of Tournament

The IIHF Independent Disciplinary Panel has suspended Swedish defenceman Alexander Edler of the Vancouver Canucks for a knee-on-knee hit against Canadian forward Eric Staal. Edler will miss the remainder of the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The incident occurred at 15:52 in the first period. Edler collided with Staal at centre ice, a hit which had Staal immediately fall down to the ice, favoring his leg and visibly in pain.

Team Canada’s captain had to be helped off the rink and did not return.

After reviewing the video evidence and the respective reports, including the Game Supervisor Report, the Referee Supervisor Report, the verbal medical report and the report from the hearing with the player, the panel has determined that Edler should have been penalized with a match penalty as he was in clear violation of the playing rule 536b (Kneeing).

On the play, Edler was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct.

The disciplinary panel deemed Edler’s action as reckless, dangerous and that it was in disregard to the vulnerability of his opponent and for that he must be held accountable.

Any additional suspension, exceeding the duration of the tournament, will be handled by the disciplinary panel to the IIHF Disciplinary Committee.

No Repeat For Hesjedal in Italy

Canadian Ryder Hesjedal has withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia.
    The Garmin-Sharp team said the defending champion pulled out due to a ``deteriorating physical condition.''
    The Victoria native, who was more than 32 minutes behind in 38th, called the decision ``heartbreaking.''
    Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins also withdrew on the advice of the team physician due to ``a worsening chest infection.''
    Hesjedal became the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour race last year.
    He has been struggling in this year's race since the Stage-8 time trial.
    ``I want to be here for my team and for all the people who have supported me to get me here to this point,'' Hesjedal said. ``I built my entire season around the Giro and I came here feeling great, but I have been suffering since the TT. We're working on it, but we're not sure what's wrong. There's a virus that's been going around, so it could be that, or severe allergies, or going too deep on the TT combined with both.
    ``Whatever it is, I'm only getting worse,'' Hesjedal added. ``Yesterday's stage was just too much for me. I fought to get through it and I know everyone suffered but after seeing the medical staff last night, I also know that it's time for me to go home, get some tests done and get healthy again.''

BC Lions Celebrate 60 Years

The BC Lions are just a little over a month away from launching their 60th season, and today they launched their fan-inspired 60th Season Celebration logo.

The logo was submitted by Rick Alsop of Coquitlam.

“Six decades of Lions football has produced a lifetime of lasting memories for fans across British Columbia,” said Lions President and CEO Dennis Skulsky. “Rick’s inspired design has truly captured our desire to create a logo which acknowledges seasons past while also celebrating the incredibly bright future ahead for our club.”

Vancouver Giants Add Bruce Allen

The Vancouver Giants officially introduced Bruce Allen as the newest member of Ron Toigo's ownership team today.

Allen, best known for managing the careers of music giants Bryan Adama and Michael Buble, says he rejected Toigo's past invitations to come on board until now because he says the Giants appear to be the only hockey team in the city with a plan for moving forward. He's also looking forward to watching the career of top draft pick Tyler Benson develop with the Giants, and hopefully leading them to a Memorial Cup Championship down the road.

The Giants also announced the signing of their top three picks from the recent bantam draft today, Benson, Matt Barberis, and Ryely McKinstry.

Baby Canucks Homeless in 2013-14

According to a report in the Peoria Journal Star, the Vancouver Canucks have notified the Peoria Civic Center they will not operate their AHL farm club in Peoria next season.

The Canucks bought the former Peoria Rivermen franchise in March from the St. Louis Blues, and did have some meetings with the Civic Center about keeping the team in the Illinois city for 2013-14.

The PJ Star quotes AHL and NHL sources as saying it is most likely the Canucks will declare their farm team dormant for the 2013-14 season.

In that scenario, they would loan their pospects to other teams in the AHL, including the Abbotsford Heat.

Whitecaps Finally Solve Galaxy

Russell Teibert scored his first two goals of the season and Darren Mattocks added his first in seven games (in stoppage time) to lead the Whitecaps to a 3-1 victory over the L-A Galaxy in front of a sell out crowd at B-C Place.

It was the Whitecaps first win in eight MLS games. It was also their first ever win over the two-time defending champion Galaxy, who were 4-0-and-1 vs Vancouver coming into today's game.

The Whitecaps now prepare for the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship that begins Wednesday against the Montreal Impact at Saputo Stadium.

Burnaby Joe Now in Charge in Denver

The Colorado Avalanche are pulling out all the stops and have named Joe Sakic as their new Executive Vice-President of Hockey Operations.

"Burnaby Joe" will now be in charge of all hockey related matters, including the hiring of a new head coach.

Patrick Roy has been rumoured to be no. 1 on Sakic's wish list.
