CARLY WEEKS
REPORTER WITH THE GLOBE AND MAIL, WORKED ON AN EXTENSIVE SERIES ABOUT SODIUM
Re: The movers and shakers of the salt world want to pinch Canadians' penchant for sodium. One recommendation from a panel of experts is for Health Canada to track how much sodium restaurants and food companies voluntarily cut from their products. That information will tell the government if it needs to do more to shake salt from the Canadian diet. The initial aim is to lower people's average daily sodium intake by about a third, to 2,300 milligrams, by 2016. For adults, 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day is considered an adequate Intake, while 2,300 mg is the upper limit. Research suggests that reducing the amount of dietary sodium to recommended levels could prevent premature deaths from heart disease and strokes in 30 to 40 Canadians a day _ saving roughly 11,000 to 15,000 lives a year. Which has more sodium, cheerios or potato chips? Carly explains.
PAUL GREENBERG
ANGLER, WRITER AND AUTHOR, “FOUR FISH: THE FUTURE OF THE LAST WILD FOOD”
Re: fish farming is a contentious issue, we hear why Paul says that despite the abundant bounty in our oceans and because we eat so much seafood, there wouldn’t be enough to go around without aquaculture. We need to strike a balance between wild fish and farmed fish.
