A TROUBLING TIME FOR PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER
The Prime Minister's chief of staff has resigned in the midst of the most serious scandal to rock the Harper government in his seven years in office. Nigel Wright announced his resignation early yesterday morning just days after it was uncovered that he wrote a personal cheque to help Senator Mike Duffy pay back $90,000 in falsely claimed living expenses. Senator Mike Duffy and Senator Pamela Wallin have both stepped down from the Tory caucus while their expenses are under scrutiny and they will sit as independents. What does this mean for PM Stephen Harper? How will he stick handle the scandal that is rocking the senate and his government?

GENDER NEUTRAL WASHROOMS
Our phone board lit up last week over a conversation on our civic affairs panel regarding gender neutral washrooms. This issue was on the table because of a recently passed motion from park commissioner Trevor Loke to establish a committee to study ways for the city’s parks and rec facilities to be more welcoming to transgendered people. Will this lead to gender neutral washrooms? Bill Bard is a School Trustee in SD68 in Nanaimo and he’s also the Chair of the Sexual Orientation Gender Identity Committee and they are currently considering putting general neutral washrooms in their buildings. He says gender neutral washrooms are not the same as unisex washrooms and they would not be replacing all male and all female washrooms. Will this likely get approved in Nanaimo and should we introduce a system like this in Vancouver too?

SHOULD VICTORIA DAY BE RE-NAMED “VICTORIA
AND FIRST PEOPLES DAY”?
A group that includes prominent actors, writers and politicians has launched a petition that urges the Canadian government to change the name of Victoria Day to “Victoria and First Peoples Day” to honour both the Crown and indigenous people in Canada. There is already a day to honour Canada’s indigenous peoples – National Aboriginal Day and it’s celebrated on June 21st but it isn’t a federal public holiday. The group is circulating their petition on victoriaandfirstpeoplesday.ca and so far they have 786 signatures. Do you support this change? As you likely predicted, our next guest does not support this proposal!

FROM SCANDAL IN THE SENATE TO THE SURPRISING BC ELECTION RESULT
Senator Wallin and Senator Duffy resigned from the Conservative caucus last week but that wasn’t enough to dial down the controversy surrounding senate expenses and the $90k cheque written from PM Harper’s chief of staff to Mike Duffy. Yesterday, Nigel Wright stepped down as chief of staff which was a big blow to the PM. Is this the biggest challenge PM Harper has faced to date? And BC Election post-mortem and a crow eating contest!! Will Adrian Dix need to step down? Who would be the best person to replace him?

HOW LOYALTY PROGRAMS INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU SHOP
Loyalty programs at supermarkets used to be as simple as getting access to the cheaper advertised prices on store shelves. But as companies fight to hold onto customers amid intensifying competition, they're using shoppers' purchasing histories to offer more personalized deals. How much data do companies collect when you use your loyalty card and how do they use this to tailor their marketing to you? Is your personal information being sold to third parties? What are the risks involved in swiping your loyalty card?

A BUSY LONG WEEKEND ON PARLIAMENT HILL

Long weekends are supposed to be relaxing, but that was not the case for politicians on Parliament Hill during this Victoria Day long weekend. On Sunday morning, the day after his 50th birthday, Prime Minister Harper’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, resigned from his position due to the scandal swirling around the personal $90,000 cheque he wrote to Senator Mike Duffy as a way for Duffy to pay back his controversial expenses. In a statement, Wright wrote that he did not intend to spark such a firestorm of controversy, but his actions were “intended solely to secure the repayment of funds” which he considered to be in the public interest. Wright continues by stating that he “did not advise the Prime Minister of the means by which Sen. Duffy’s expenses were repaid, either before or after the fact.”

Harper also had to deal with the resignation of Conservative Senator Pamela Wallin this long weekend. Wallin is one of the senators in the middle of the expense scandal and despite Harper stating that he had “looked over her expenses” and that her “travel costs are comparable to any parliamentarian” she still resigned over the attention on her expenses. Why did she resign if Harper had ensured the government that her expenses were okay? What do these resignations mean for Harper’s government?

ROB FORD CONTROVERSY
A video has surfaced showing what appears to be Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking what looks to be crack cocaine, according to reporters at the Toronto Star and US gossip website Gawker. Our next guest claims to have seen the video footage but Gawker wanted six figures for the video and the Toronto Star did not end up buying the footage. Meanwhile, Rob Ford is denying the allegations through his lawyer but when will the public hear from the mayor? What are people saying about the video scandal in Toronto? Is the entire story hard to believe and frankly, a little sketchy? Should people believe what they see on the internet – on Twitter, Gawker, etc?
