Brain cramps early cost Canucks

In their first real test of the young season, the Vancouver Canucks suffered from brain cramps, committing costly turnovers early and taking ill-timed penalties late as the San Jose Sharks ran their record to a perfect 5-0 with a 4-1 win.

The Sharks top line of Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau combined on all four goals and six points in the game as Pavelski potted a pair while Marleau and Thornton collected singles in the win.

As far as the brain cramps were concerned, Jason Garrison and Alex Edler were gift givers in this one, as Garrison fed a beauty to Thornton just 43 seconds in while Edler gave the same treatment to Pavelski just 3 minutes later, gift wrapping a goal for Pavelski as he beat a helpless Cory Schneider and gave the Sharks a quick two goal lead.

A needless penalty from Max Lapierre set up the Sharks potent power play to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead on Marleau’s 9th of the season. Lapierre was benched for nearly a period after that miscue.

The Canucks are 1-1 on their three game road trip and now head to Los Angeles for a game tomorrow night against the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings…game time at 7:30 PM.

Catch the CKNW post game show with Dave Sheldon and David Pratt on Sportstalk Weekend at 9PM. Dave will also welcome Iain MacIntrye for the Sunday night hockey show later on in the program.
