Charity was the order of the evening as Kevin Bieksa’s NHL Buddies took on the UBC Thuderbird’s Men’s Hockey team in a fundraiser at UBC.
Bieksa’s team of NHL and celebrity friends and coaches scored five unanswered goals to pull out a 8-7 win over the T-Birds, but it was more about the off-ice story that made a local superstar the first star of the game.
Multi-platinum recording star and part owner of the WHL’s Vancouver Giants had the crowd on their feet at Thunderbird Arena when in was announced that Buble would match the $100,000 raised by ticket sales and auction and turn the donation to three local charities into a $200,000 windfall.
Buble, who spoke to the media afterwards and was a healthy scratch for Bieksa’s Buddies, actually pulled himself from the game just prior with a case of cold feet. ‘I will admit it, we all think we can do what these guys do from the comfort of our couch,’ said Buble. ‘But when I was down at ice level and saw the speed that these guys play at, I didn’t want to embarrass myself.’
