CKNW Sports has learned that the Simon Fraser Clan football team will be penalized due to the use of an ineligible player. If the Canada West conference follows through on precedent, SFU will also lose two of three wins earned in their opening games.
Expect an official announcement later this afternoon, or early tomorrow morning.
Quarterback/Receiver Caleb Clark played two games for Western Michigan last year. SFU hoped to get him to play a fifth year as a graduate student, but he was not fully enrolled in a graduate program until September 24.
The Clan was 2-1 at that point. Currently, Simon Fraser sits with a 3-4 record and is tied for a playoff spot with Regina and Alberta.
SFU defeated UBC and Manitoba in those games, and it is likely that the Thunderbirds will now move to 2-5, while Manitoba will move into a three-way tie for third spot at 3-3 with Regina and Alberta.
Both forfeit games will go into the books as 1-0 wins for UBC and Manitoba.
It’s a black eye for Simon Fraser who is moving to NCAA division-2 next season.
However, many at the school say they are the victims of unfair treatment from the conference they are leaving.
