  • Hodgson Top Rookie in January
NEW YORK _ Vancouver Canucks centre Cody Hodgson has been named the NHL's rookie of the month for January.    The 21-year-old led all rookies in scoring with 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 11 games.    Hodgson edged Philadelphia Flyers forwards Sean Couturier and Matt Read, Ottawa Senators forward Colin Greening, Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw and Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis.    Hodgson delivered clutch performances against Vancouver's fiercest rivals last month, scoring the game-winning goals in victories over the Boston Bruins and the San Jose Sharks.    He closed the month by adding the game-tying goal ...
  • SCHNEIDER SAVES CANUCKS BACON IN 3-2 OT WIN
Cory Schneider was the story in this game, turning aside 37 of 39 shots as the Canucks overcame a sloppy second period to defeat the Chicago Black Hawks 3-2 in overtime. Schneider had to compensate for a team in front of him that after the first five minutes of the game, lost their skating legs until early in the third. The young net minder made 15 saves in a one sided second period as the Black Hawks came in waves. Schneider’s best save was on former Canucks forward Brendan Morrison, making his debut in Hawks colours. Morrison picked up a ...

The Frenchman had just one goal for Seattle in his 2009 debut season in Major League Soccer but found his form in Philadelphia, scoring 25 goals over the last two years.    ``Sebastien is a proven goalscorer and playmaker in Major League Soccer,'' Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie said Tuesday ...

OTTAWA _ Former Ottawa Senators Marian Hossa and Zdeno Chara scored 16 seconds apart in a six-goal third period as the Team Chara downed the crowd favourite Team Alfredsson 12-9 in the NHL all-star game on Sunday.    Team Chara lost the lead four times only to pile up an insurmountable lead in the third with goals from Phil Kessel, Jarome Iginla, Corey Perry and the second of the game by Joffrey Lupul.    Tim Thomas, who caused an uproar when he refused to join his Boston teammates on a trip to meet President Barack Obama at the White House, ...
  • SOC: Canada Has Big Hill to Climb Before London
VANCOUVER _ Canada's women's soccer team still needs some work to do before it can share a pitch with the best team in the world.    Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan scored two goals apiece to lead the top-ranked United States to a 4-0 victory over Canada in the CONCACAF women's Olympic qualifying tournament final Sunday.    ``I apologize for not doing what we could have done tonight,'' said Canadian squad coach John Herdman. ``There's certainly more to this team.''    With the win, the United States also claimed the CONCACAF championship. Both teams had already qualified for the London ...
