Concession strike leaves Canucks fans Sober and Hungry

It was a good Friday night for the Canucks at G.M. Place, as they won 4-2 over the L.A. Kings.

But it was a different story for fans trying to buy food inside the rink.

Food and drink stalls at the Garage were in short supply because concession workers went out on strike.

There seemed to be a consensus from Canucks fans who spilled out of the stadium after braving the line-ups:

They were too long.

Some fans said it took them a half hour to buy chips or a beer.

But one upside: Concessioners sold cans of Canadian at a cheaper price: 6 dollars.

Before Friday night's game, almost 300 striking concession workers, represented by Unite Here Local 40, set up a picket line outside Gate 10 of the arena, and the BC Federation of Labour also asked fans not to cross it.

While most fans ignored the plea, Michelle Travis with Unite Here Local 40 says their beef is not with Canucks fans, but their employer, Aramark.

She says more pickets could be set up, "It's a possibility, it's not off the table.  It really does depend on how much movement we can get with Aramark at the table.  But at this point, anything is possible."

Travis says wages and medical coverage are key issues for the union.
